European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - March 5, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Wednesday March 5, 1986 the stars and stripes Page 11 dear Ann Landers St. Patrick s Day is coming. This Means parties Irish Coffee Beer Bour Bon scotch and soda and Vodka martinis. I want to share a Story with your read ers that changed my attitude toward Friendship drinking and driving. Several years ago when i was 22,1 attended a party at which i drank several glasses of festive spiked punch. Though i knew Good and Well i was intoxicated i decided to drive Home. A Pla tonic Friend named de stopped me at the door and tried to persuade me not to drive Home. I argued with him insisted that i was perfectly of but he refused to give up. It ended in an ugly scene with me hitting and kicking him because he took my car keys away and would t give them Back. Finally exhausted and crying i gave in and de drove me Home in his car. He even arranged for a Friend to follow in my car so i would have it in the morning. How i hated him that night de and i went our separate ways. We both married and had kids. We lived hundreds of Miles apart and have been out of touch for several years. I think of de often. What a special Friend he was to take the kicks and blows and All that ugliness because he thought my life might be in danger. If i Ever see de again i want to Tell him what his persistence and courage have meant to me All these years. I Hope that others will understand that stopping a Friend from driving drunk can be a gift of life and even though she he May be furious with you at the time that person will be forever grateful. Alive and Well in Ohio dear alive and Well thanks for sharing your Story. And now Why not track downed through Mutual friends and Send him this column it would make his Day. Dear Ann Landers i read an advertisement for permanent Eye lining a process similar to tattooing. A Needle is used by an expert of course and the rims of the eyelids Are tattooed Black dark Brown or whatever color you prefer. This saves a lot of time for women like me who would t go out of the House without using an eyeliner. I saved my Money and had it done last november. The operation was quite painful and i could t go to work for 10 Days because my eyes were swollen and pus was coming out of the lids. My eyes were stuck shut in the morning and i had to apply hot compresses to get them open. Also there were More wrinkles around my eyes and 1 think i look older. I am 42. When i went Back to the doctor and complained he said he was sorry that the Needle was defective and refunded my $950. I really would like to have the operation done again because i know if it is done right it will improve my looks a lot. Can you recommend a doctor who does this Type of work i live in Suffolk county. Farmingdale . Dear . Sorry no recommendations. I have Noth ing Good to say about that procedure. There May be some Good technicians around but in my opinion it is a risky operation. I have heard from several women whose eyes were ruined because of it. The word from Here is return to your eyeliner after the lids Are completely healed and Don t let anybody else inject Dye into your eyelids. Readers wishing to write to news America Syndi Cate columnist Landers May address their letters in care of the stars and stripes Apo 09211, . Forces courteous smokers ask a Little common Courtesy we would like to comment on the Issue of the smoker is. The non smoker. We have for the most part tried to re Spect the non smokers by sitting Only in the smoking areas of restaurants and moving a Little away from a crowd at the bus Stop or train station to Light up. Since most of the germans we have seen smoke or if they Don to it does not seem to bother them we have had no problems. It is the american people who Are raising such a stink about the whole thing. Why does the government insist on baby sitting Twenty or 30 some Odd years ago the surgeon general determined that cigarette smoking is dangerous to our health. Fine. The companies complied and put the warning right there on the packs. Is that not sufficient apparently not to the non smokers. It is our opinion that the warning is enough. Most of the Money the government is spending for a fact that was discovered All these years ago could much better be spent on cancer and aids research or More and better on those artificial hearts and other organs. Things Are starting to really get ridiculous now. Take the recent California Law suit for instance. Some family there decided it was the cigarette company s fault that their father or whoever some member of the family died. Surely no one held a gun to that poor Man s head and forced him space exploration applauded i read with dismay the remarks of professors Edward and Alex Roland in a recent edition of the stars and stripes. Professor claims that the loss of the challenger and its Crew was a loss for a project of Little scientific a physics teacher of All people should be better informed about the nature of scientific inquiry. Since when is the value of an Experiment known before the Experiment is actually Complete sometimes results Are wholly unexpected and sometimes there is danger involved. I can see professor at the turn of the Century wagging a Stern Finger at Marie and Pierre Curie. This Heap of dirt he would have said has Little scientific and later As Marie developed the unfortunate signs of leukaemia i told you and i can see professor Roland shouting after Wilber and Orville Wright As they lift off at Kitty Hawk it in t Worth the risk and later when Amelia Earhart is lost at sea i told you space science is an explorer s realm. Safe in his lab with the products of other people s daring professor May find it easy to choose which missions Are useful and which Are not. But if he thinks Ordinary people characterized As sightseers do not belong in space his vision extends Only to the end of next week. He cannot see space stations or the mining of asteroids. Or the colonization of Mars. It is Ordinary people who would do such work with the help of machines. Transporters like the shuttle will carry teachers of All kinds. My Comfort is that Neys and Rolands have always been in the minority. Even now after the horrible event of Jan. 28, i know i am not the Only Ordinary citizen who would seize the Chance to Board the next shuttle. And there will be one. If All that we have Learned from this last fatal Mission is that the shuttle in t perfect the project was of great scientific value. But we Learned More than that. The grief we shared for the loss of seven people was underscored by our Pride in their courage and by our understanding that their sacrifice reaffirmed our Trust in the future of Humankind. We realized As a nation that our investment in the space program far beyond the Cost in dollars is great expectation. Those seven were not alone up there. Our hearts and minds were with them. And for that achievement professor 1 have All kinds of if that in t a compelling argument for manned spaceflight professor Roland Why bother even with machines Judith Alamia la Maddelena Sardinia Italy response to dissatisfied writer i am writing in response to the letter in which the writer made it Clear that he was dissatisfied with the conditions in the serv ice and looking Forward to separation in six months. The one thing this writer and Many others lose sight of when they enter the service is that we Are Here to do just that. Serve. Not be competitive with civil Ian occupations not live a life of luxury in Europe not unfortunately have the kind of Security that others enjoy in their jobs. That should not be a Surprise to anyone. It is up front when you enlist and nobody tells you different. Some people just hear different. I doubt that this writer got nervous in the service overnight. If he was not satisfied with the Way of life he should have turned that id card in Long ago and moved on to a softer More stable life. Instead he chose to stay in a profession he was not Happy with and complain. I describe the military As a profession rather than a Job because a profession re quires a greater amount of sacrifice from its disciples than a Job where you earn Money to live. The military requires subordinating what you would like to provide for your family on a regular basis Home stability Etc to the needs of our chosen profession for one example. No one really likes this but most of us recognize that it is necessary in a democracy in order to avoid the problems associated with a pampered military elite. I manage to balance these needs in a fairly equal manner most of the time. It is part of the profession to do so. Some people just can t make the adjustment to being Public if members of the uniformed services cannot accept the fact that they Are at the mercy of the elected government for pay As Well As their very lives should War be declare then they should have the strength of their convictions and get out. I suggest that service members tighten their belts and be prepared to face some cuts in the future. This is not the first time we have been faced with this situation audit will not be the last. Just remember what Rudyard Kipling said in one of his poems it s Tommy this and Tommy that and Chuck him out the brute. But it s Savior of the nation when the guns begin to not a new situation is it capt. Roger l. Perkins Heidelberg pen pals i would like to have pen pals. Joy Jakosalem 264-a Gorordo ave. Gema Valencia 16 Raelyn Valencia 29 61 Valencia drive Daro Dumaguet City Negros Oriental Philippines 6501 to smoke three packs a Day for 50-Odd years we were surprised the Case even made it to court after All the Man died years ago. Did it take the family doctor that Long to determine cause of death again the warning of the risk to health is right there on the pack. If the smoker takes no heed Well it s a free country. We have never read or heard about a lawsuit when stunt people get killed. They take a deliberate risk the same As a smoker. The ignorance Pica just will not serve because most people can read or hear the warnings. One can also feel the effects of smoking such As shortness of breath cough ing or feeling the cold More. The non smoker is so worried about his own health but you can bet Money he will drive his car on every possible occasion in Stead of walking or Riding a bicycle. Think of All that Carbon monoxide. No emission system is that Good. We have Little sympathy for the non smoker because he is very often quite rude about the smoking. Once in a while he will be reasonable about it if we forget to ask leave to smoke and Light up in his pres ence. We have no complaint with the non smoker who has manners if we forget ours. Summing up when they quit driving Well quit smoking. There is no difference. Carbon monoxide is Carbon monoxide whatever emits it.
