European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - March 9, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Sunday March 9, 1986 the stars and stripes Page 23 fan picks . Racing Over formula i dear editor on feb. 22, i read a letter written by sgt. Scudder in your paper. I wholeheartedly agree with both the positive and negative Points that he brought out. I would also like to re emphasize one Point that scud Der made we Don t need nor do we want the amount of coverage you give to formula i racing. We want to read about racing from the states. What is even More depressing than the stars and stripes apparent Lack of interest for american Auto racing is an s total disregard for the sport. We received nearly six hours of super bowl coverage All of the world series games but not a minute of the Daytona 500, which is Lascar s largest event pays the second largest financial rewards in the world for Drivers and had attendance of Over 120,000. I thank the stars and stripes for its coverage and i Hope someone at an wakes up by next year so we May see the 1987 Daytona 500 instead of another regular season basketball game. Frank Hughes Berlin no Marathon record dear stars and stripes first of All i think you do a great Job in covering All areas of the news. From the headlines comics and Best of All sports you re the Best. But i feel i must Correct a statement made in the Benoit Samu Elson wins Sullivan award article in the feb. 26, 1986, edition. The a article stated Benoit Samuelson set a world Best time of 2 hours 21.21 seconds in the Ameri Ca s Marathon last year. This is not True the world Best time for the Marathon distance for women belongs to Norway s Ingrid Kristiansen set in the 1985 London Marathon with a time of 2 hours 21.06 seconds. Secondly May i ask a question. Do your newspaper editors Check the articles you receive from the associated press for factual information again thank you for doing such a great Job of re porting the world news in our language keep up the Good work Michael j. Olivera we Bruecken editor s note yes we do Check our copy for factual errors but we blew this one. You re right. Joan Benoit Samuelson won the America s Marathon but missed the record. Ingrid Kristiansen who holds the record was second. See picture on this Page that we ran after the race in october. Comments on mat coverage dear editor this is my first letter to an editor and i have actually been contemplating this one for quite a few Days 11 to be exact. I would like to Call your attention to the reporting of the recent Central european wrestling tournament which appeared in stripes on sunday feb. 16,1986. Surely Patch Barracks High school s Brad Carr de served More than a Brief mention in the 19th paragraph of the sports Story after All he was named the most valuable wrestler in this year s tournament. Whenever i read professional sports articles it seems to me that the most valuable is one who is highlighted in the write about the sporting event be it the world series super bowl a basketball tournament at any level or the like. A photo Joan Benoit right receives congratulations. Norway s Ingrid Kristiansen salutes Winner of course you la say this is just sour grapes from my biased eyes because i m from Patch Barracks. However before you say this let me Point out a few other examples of shoddy sports writing taken from the same article. Somson Crepeau and Saunders were headlined and the Story led with the fact that they were repeat champions. Fine but Crepeau was identified As Mike Crepeau from Frankfurt when in fact As the next Day s match by match results were printed the Winner of his third title was Danny Crepeau. Any Alert Reader would have questioned this Misnomer because the twelfth paragraph of sunday s article had will Sandidge from Heidelberg pinning Frankfurt freshman Mike Crepeau. Two wrestlers from the same team with the same name wrestling in different weight classes repeat champions need to be congratulated but nine paragraphs Worth especially when Tracy Tanner staff writer wrote. Saunders seemed to take a lacklustre it made me wonder about him being head lined. Eric Barela was the 155-Pound Champion and de served to have his picture accompany the Story As did each Young Man who won a championship match. But a file photo and no mention of the pictured Champion until the 20th paragraph in the 26th paragraph Heidelberg coach Phil god Bolt was quoted i Don t think my boys Are scared of me but they do know i m the Boss and i make the certainly there must have been some other remarks that led up to the above comment. This leads me to believe that the writer was trying to satisfy the old journalism 101" requirement to include quotes in the Story or trying to fill space. The comment by coach Godbolt needs to be put in context because As is it leads me to believe some Type of controversy has been going on in Heidelberg. Consistency in writing is key. Several comments about different wrestlers included career records this year s record Etc. Yet the tournament s most valuable wrestler Brad Carr whose aggressive tactics dominated. And earned him. Award had no mention of his impressive credentials. To be consistent let s list Carr s wrestling accomplishments. In 1985-86, Brad Carr s record was 17-0, despite missing his team s first four matches because of a Bro Ken wrist suffered in his school s last football game of the season. Only a Junior Carr has been the Southern Region Champion for three years compiling a 59-5 re Cord. Four of those career defeats were in his freshman year when he wound up third in the Central european tournament and the fifth loss was in his Sophomore year in the Central european championship match. With his seasons 21-4, 21-1 and 17-0, we would Hope for him to reach greater Heights for Patch High next year. Unfortunately for Patch Barracks Carr will de part this summer when his parents return to conus. I know however that one High school in the state of Washington will certainly Benefit by his presence. Congratulations to All the Young men who earned the title of Central european Champion congratulations Brad Carr Central european tournament most valuable wrestler Good Luck in the future Charlie White Stuttgart editor s note we regret the mistakes that appeared in the wrestling Story and thank the writer for giving credit to some of the outstanding wrestlers. We re proud of the Job our sports staff did on this particular weekend under the circumstances. At the same time wrestlers from 31 schools were competing in the Central european meet at shape 16 teams were competing in the big schools basketball tournament at Mannheim and 16 teams were playing in the Small schools basketball tournament at Stutt Gart. Giving adequate coverage to three championships of this size would require a much larger sports staff than ours. And As usual there were other games and events taking place throughout our circulation area. As you May have noticed it took Over half of a Page of stripes just to list the results of the wrestling championships. Most of our staff worked two shifts under deadline pressures the Day All three High school championships ended. When one of our editors had finished he thought typing the wrestling Story from shape into our computer he gave the copy a Quick Reading while the reporter was still on the Telephone and said hey Aren t we missing a match our reporter said yes they Are still on the mat. Hold the line open for a minute the re almost one hour later that edition with the result of that last match was rolling off the presses. It was that kind of weekend.
