European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - March 9, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 26 stars and stripes sunday March 9, 1986 Gumbo s Ball hawking paces Falconette wins a photo by Gus Schuetzle Frankfurt s Jackie Gumbo. Dribbles around Giessen s Shirley Berry by Tim Boivin staff writer Frankfurt with Tufe game on the line saturday the Frankfurt Falconette turned to a Ball Hawk someone who could Lay Down the Law and hold on to the Ball. That someone was Jackie Cumbo and when this my Captain secures something Frankfurt can lock up a game and throw away the key. Such was the Case saturday As Frankfurt handcuffed a Pesky Giessen squad 76-66 at Drake Edwards gymnasium to improve its record to 10-1 on the year in v corps. And it was Cumbo whom the Falconette kept turning to when the game appeared As if it was starting to slip away. Giessen which fell to 7-4, was counting on its own bal handlers to upset the Falconette who had come from behind earlier in the season to thrash the wolverines 57-45. We have six players now that we did t have then Giessen coach Byron Pernell said before the game. We let that earlier game slip away from us in the last five minutes. Then they pressed us and we did t have any body who could handle the Ball coming up court. I think we do now in Valerie Allen who had to play Forward last time because of our Lack of Allen got her Points 22 in All but she could probably still learn a thing or six about bal handling from Cumbo. Cumbo Only had 14 Points but the Virginia Beach a. Native was a commanding Force on offence gearing Down or revving up the Falconette offence whenever the Situa Tion called for it. Meanwhile the wolverines appeared to be trying to throw this game away Early literally. Giessen s inside game must have stepped outside for some fresh air in the first half As the wolverines Only hit on 7 of 17 shots from underneath the Basket. That set the tone for a poor shoot ing Day for Giessen which shot just under 40 percent from the Field for the game. Meanwhile Cumbo and mates set up a Box and one to Cut Down the Giessen bal handlers. That led to a Bunch of turnovers which were converted into a 39-28 halftime Frankfurt advantage. And it was Cumbo leading the Way either hounding the Ball handler on defense As the Point in the Box and on or dribbling circles around the wolverines and then dishing off Crisp passes from backcourt to the front line of Bonni Cannon and Donna Brayboy for inside shots. Cannon gunned in 25 to Lead All scorers while Brayboy added 17. The wolverines did t quit. They came out after the half and went on a 14-4 spurt to close the Gap to one 43 42 with 15 minutes left. According to Cumbo it was purely intentional that she did t happen to handle the Ball As much As the wolverines closed the Gap. When they started to put More pressure on me after the half we decided to let the other players handle the Ball. We wanted to let them know that other players on the team were capable of handling the Ball also the graduate of St. Augustus . College said. But that was t what turned the game Back Over to the Falconette. Giessen went up 48-47 As Center Brenda Moore blocked three shots that the wolverines brought Dow court and turned into baskets. But then Pernell pulled Moore out citing fatigue. The Falconette then went from the Box and one to a 3-2 and trapping the Ball with the three guards. Without the dominant defensive Force of Moore in the Lane the Falconette with Cumbo went Back inside to Brayboy and Cannon. Frankfurt moved out to a 60-53 advantage before Cannon finished off the wolverines with her usual end of game bombing run. Cannon who has the inside knockout punch needed at the end of a close game had 9 of the Falconette last 17 Points to Seal the Victory. Pernell was also counting on Moore for the offence to offset the Falconette front line of Brayboy and Cannon but Moore s contribution on offence was negligible. She ended with Only one Field goal and six Points. Aba from Page 21 or. Boston coach .
