He discovered Gor Dan and recruited him for Safe. I was training on roller skis when Colo Nel Hinton saw me said Gordan who won saturday s 2.6-Kilometer sprint opening event of the Safe nordic championships. He told me about this meet and said i should compete. He even gave me his flying gloves to use. I was Over Here last Winter but did t know about Hinton has since rotated from Gordan s unit which is located in Ahlhorn in North Ern Germany but is attached to the 81st tac fighter Wing at Ben Waters England. Hinton s recruit was a Winner. Gordan who s from Maine and says his friends Call him Flash skied the two Hill course in 10 minutes 26.73 seconds. Rhein main s John Reuille also competing in his first Safe meet placed second in the open divison with an 11 03.90 time. Dick Baird who is representing Ramstein but is stationed in Bonn gave the seniors division a source of Pride with the second fastest time of the Day. The 35-year old Baird clocked 10 47.50 to win the 30-39 division. Baird is one of a dozen Iron men and women of Safe skiing competing in both the Alpine and nordic meets. He finished fifth in the Alpine combined last week. No Venich s Hans Gazecki shooting for his third straight nordic combined title recorded the sixth fastest time of the Day 1 38.52, to capture the masters race by a wide margin. The masters age group starts at 40 and Gazecki is a full decade past that age. Wiesbaden nurse Barbara Heiller also a nordic and Alpine competitor won a close race with Sharon Antisdel of Rhein main for the women s Crown. Competing in her first Cross country race Heiller recorded a 15 18.97 time. Antisdel was a Little under 2 seconds behind in 15 30.87. Heiller and Steve Palm who was a close second in seniors joined open racer Robert Verfurth and masters entrant James Rich Ardson to give Wiesbaden a first place in the three team relay race which followed the sprint. Wiesbaden s time for the 10.4-Kilometer relay was 53 minutes 49.28 seconds. Rhein main placed second to solidify the team Lead after two events. Pm clocked 57 38.49 with a team of Steve Carter an Tisdel Steve Slivinke and Reuille. Carter who swept Alpine honors As a masters entrant last week moved up to the seniors division because pm had two other Strong Over-40 entrants in Slivinke and Richard imm. Hahn s team of senior Mike Minard women s racer Karen Toenjes master Paul oilman and open third Placer Claude car Ter finished third in 1 00 10.8. Rhein main trailed Hahn after the first leg.
