European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - March 13, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday March 13, 1986 the stars and stripes Page 21 football s of Tor girls soccer in to Why does Dodds Mediterranean persist in doing strange things in 1984, Deanna Hanssen was permitted to play on the Simonella High school football team. That was t Dodds a s fault completely. It just did t act on the request for her to play by turning it Down at the regional level. Instead they sent it to Washington where Dodds director or. Beth Stephens gave approval. In a feb. 22, 1986, directive Dodds a has designated soccer As a Contact the directive additionally states that because of the potential physical harm to girls in Contact sports it is not appropriate for them to compete on coed so far so Good however in the very next sentence the directive Grants girls permission to try out for boys soccer teams providing principals make it Clear to parents desiring their children to compete that it is not a change of policy. Principals also must Point out that Dodds a maintains that the need to guarantee the health and safety of girls outweighs parental and student desire to participate in coed Contact sports but recogni7.es that some parents feel come on now football is of and soccer in to and if the health and safety of the girls is so important Why Back Down those parents who might sue to Force the use of girls on boys teams probably Are the same ones who would sue despite having granted their permission if the girls play and do indeed get Hurt. Another thing that is disturbing is Dodds a s Al lowing eighth graders to compete in interscholastic sports. I realize that their presence could make a difference Between a school As Small As Livorno Fielding a team or not. But what about the possibility of these 13 and 14 year old kids getting seriously injured because they re thrown in with much bigger much More mature juniors and seniors i would reckon that the chances of their being Hurt in such Competition would be even greater than those of the girls. Ben Abrams almost As important As the health Factor is the eligibility one. Only eight semesters of Competition on the varsity level Are permitted under High school regulations. It would t be fair to the kids to permit them to compete now Only to find out in their senior year when it is much More important that they have used up their Scholastic eligibility. I Trust that coaches using them now Are making them aware of such a future possibility. Italy wrapped up regular season basketball last weekend with Vicenza winning its third straight boys title to go along with its third straight conference title and Naples taking its second consecutive girls Crown. All conference selections were made before the tournament began and the coaches realized that basketball is a five person game and did t select everybody and his her Uncle. Champion Vicenza 51-4 Over the three championship seasons led the balloting with two players Claudell Bagby and Andre Davis. Aviano s Ashley Wright Naples Sam Washburn and notre Dame s Brian Mccammon rounded out the cast. Aviano and Naples had four of the five girls berths. Aviano selectee were Heidi Miley and Betsy Stafford Naples put Kelly Nichols and Serita Shera on the squad. The other player named was Mary mount s Ber Nadette Kelleher. Speaking of All Star teams there does t appear to be substantial interest so far in the stars and stripes All Europe team. With the deadline March 18 less than a week away nominations have been received from Only 10 girls coaches and eight boys mentors. Administrators apparently scared off some european invitational tournament wrestlers last week especially those from Germany. But tournament director Karena Burchfield called the meet hosted by the Naples boosters club and parents of Naples wrestlers at the naval support activities Center successful. We were hoping for Between 80 and 90 wrestlers and More than 60 made it to Naples Burchfield said saturday night. We were Able to determine champions in every bracket except the 112-Pound class. I was disappointed in the turnout from Germany. I had been told that some Good wrestlers from several schools would be Here but Only one wrestler from Germany made it. Despite their absence the Competition was very the Lone Germany representative was Zweibruck in s Darius Gallegos who won the 155-Pound title. The . Had almost a Complete squad and Italy Belgium and Spain also were represented. The Lack of Germany competitors really surprises me because that Region always has had a Strong representation in such events. The parents in the Germany schools always have been Active in seeing that their offspring take advantage of every Opportunity to improve their scholarship chances. The tournament did not have Dodds approval. Dodds has a policy of not sanctioning postseason events unless they Deal with Host nation Type of events. 999 Steve Harivel 1983 Central european 98 Pound Champion from Brussels is a member of coach Fred Powell s 10-Man Slippery Rock team which will put on a we Klong clinic at Brussels High school june 16-20.
