Just last night it happened again in the dining room of a Fine hotel. The Host Ess asked is there just one of you i reputed briskly yes there is just one of she gave me a look of pity As if to say poor thing she does t even have one Friend who will have dinner with i enjoy eating out at least once a week. Often i Don t have the inclination Jar the time to make prior arrangements for companionship. I take along a Magazine or newspaper clippings that i Haven t had time to read and i enjoy myself a great Deal More than some couples around me who Don t say so much As one word to each other. Please dear print this. There must be millions of Solo diners who will appreciate seeing this letter in print. Just one of medea just Here s your letter and my thanks for letting the world know that some solitary diners enjoy it that Way especially folks who Are surrounded by people All Day. To them silence is truly Golden. Dear Landers i am writing in response to your advice to on the verge in she was the would be exhibitionist who had a wild urge to confront the postman messenger or meter Reader scantily Clad or in the nude. The one in the dunce Cap is me. Many other California attorneys wrote but your letter came in first. Thanks a Heap. Dear Landers i wonder How Many teachers realize what a glorious privilege it is to have the Opportunity to shape so Many Young lives. Please print the following for the Benefit of others in my profession who May not realize what a difference they can make. G.l., Cleveland i be come to a frightening conclusion that i am the decisive element in the classroom. It s my personal approach that creates the climate. It s my daily mood that makes the weather. As a teacher i possess a tremendous Power to make a child s life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or humor Hurt or heal. In All situations it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated and a child humanized or Don t wait to open retirement account says Reader your recent Story on the individual retirement accounts was very Well done and came at a very appropriate time. The article by Robert Carter was of partic ular interest. As the personal financial manager at Hahn a i also encourage people to con Sider an Ira and i would like to add to what or. Carter said. It is True that the More Money you make the larger a tax break you get but the Ira can help everyone. For example if you make $10,000 and invest $1,000 in an Ira you will get an increase in your refund of $160. A return of 16 percent for any income bracket is Well worthwhile. I agree with or. Carter that a younger age usually Means lower income and it May also mean an emphasis in spending for con Sumer goods such As cars or stereos. However i think that it is important to Start an Ira at a younger age for two reasons. First if you Start an Ira when you Are 21 rather than 31, you will have an extra 10 years of interest accumulating tax free during the very important begin Ning of the savings period. As an example if you invest $1,000 a year at 10 percent for 40 years before your retirement you will have $486,852 waiting for you at retirement. If you wait 10 years before starting your Ira account and everything else being equal the same program for 30 years will give you $180,943. In other words waiting those 10 years to Start an Ira will Cost $305,909 in lost benefits. This is a very High Price to pay to wait until you can afford it. A second reason to Start an Ira Early is that there is never a Good time to Start saving. There is always a new camera to buy or a trip to take but if you can get into the habit of saving Early it becomes that much easier to save later when you make More Money. An Ira of $1,000 can be done with an allotment of$42 a payday. Or. Carter makes the Point the Over seas service members Are at a disadvantage when it comes to receiving timely information. I have two comments on this. First the sunday Issue of the stars and stripes reports the Mutual fund prices and i find that Money and Busi Ness week magazines Are in the Bookstore on time every month. The second and far More important Point is that any investment that requires daily or even weekly monitoring would probably be so risky that i would never invest in it or recommend it to anyone else. Any investment whether for an Ira or not should be judged on what kind of a return it might give and How risky it is. Up to the minute information should be important Only to professional brokers and fund managers. In Short the individual retirement account is a wonderful Opportunity to save Money to supplement other retire ment programs. It provides excellent tax advantages to everyone and 1 would Sug Gest that everybody give it some serious consideration. In fact the irs even gives you up to april 15 to work out your taxes with and without an Ira so that you can see its advantages and if you like the increase in the refund that it provides it allows you to specify that a contribution made in 1986 be counted on your 1985 tax return. Daniel c. Humber Hahn a Germany sergeant thanks germans for Friendship memories we Are leaving Germany soon. Thinking Back three years ago we were so shy and awkward in our new surroundings but that first step meant everything. We began by much walking and dining in Gas Haeuser helped us meet new friends. The German folks helped us relax and feel right at Home. We laughed especially at Pur own bumbling when it came to learn ing new words and communicating but relearned. We spent Many pleasant afternoons at our Host s Home and the hospitality was overwhelming. We picked wild berries and mushrooms in the Forest and exchanged recipes. The whole roasted pig and All those barbecues were More than fun. We delighted at your comments on our american cuisine when we entertained you at our Home. We Volks marched every weekend possible and marvelled at the health of the elderly who take part in this pastime and kept passing us on the Trail. Then there were the castles splendid cathedrals tiny Village churches and museums. We explored the Lovely Countryside on bicycles mopeds and trains. Shopping in the marketplace was interesting. We collected three photo albums full of Countryside and celebrations through the changing seasons. Your Celebration of Christmas was spectacular and How about All that wonderful Snow to sled in How wonderful to pause on a walk and watch the Farmers harvesting the Fields and to walk through Miles of vineyards. We Learned customs attending our share of Fasching celebrations outdoor festivals an carnivals. Easter is so Beautiful with the Small Vil Lage fountains decorated like giant crowns adorned with hundreds of hand painted eggs. Although these Are simple pleasures we Are glad to have experienced their uniqueness proof indeed that some of life s greatest pleasures Are free or Cost very Little. Thank you dear friends. The entire Kohmann clan. The Kochs and the Schultzs and to All the Fine folks who made us feel right at Home we say Ger Many thanks for the memories my family and i will never forget sgt. David Shriner Bamberg Germany budget cutbacks bother student 1 am a senior at Stuttgart american High school and i have a few complaints not about school and i know there Are other seniors and underclassmen who share my feelings. My complaint is about the budget cuts. It seems the Wall is tumbling Down at the wrong time. Sure i know if it was t my senior year it would be someone else s. I heard that Dodds Germany would not print most of us figured it was because of budget cuts because for two months we have been working on poems and stories for this Book. The problem is in the communities too. Some buses were cancelled to the off Post housing there is a hiring freeze on sum Mer jobs for youth and there Are quite a few seniors who want to work. I believe we Haven t fully Felt the cuts yet and i am kind of glad that i won t be in school next year because those kids Are really going to suffer the most. Education is so important Why was some Money Cut who will Benefit from taking Money away from those of us who Are going to be out there in the Job Force very soon let us have our education just like you did. One More thing to think about. If Money is Cut from our summer hire Gram just think How Many kids there will be with nothing to do going to the swim Ming Pool gets to be tedious if that is the Only thing to do every Day Terri Williams Heilbronn Germany pen pals dear Cleveland Haim Ginott thanks for that Gem.
