A few looked Good enough to win a Pennant. But teams like Atlanta Minnesota bos ton and Montreal Haven t lived up to expectations and to Many the reason Why is Stilla mystery. It s the Little things that help you win the things you Don t often see on paper 1 says Chuck Tanner who As the new Man Ager of the braves will try to turn thing around in Atlanta. You look at the eight players you put on the Field and they look pretty Good. And sometimes All it takes is to get out there and. Improve each person by 10 percent says Tanner who guided the Pittsburgh pirates to a world series championship Over Balti More in 1979. You need contributions from everyone they All have to help. You Don t need a 20 game Winner but you need 10 Good pitch ers. I m the Only manager to win a world series without a 15-game Winner on my staff he asked. The braves Are a classic example of a Tea that went wrong. They won the National league West in 1982, then lost a rain delayed playoff to the St. Louis cardinals who would go on to win the world series. The following year with players like Dale Murphy Bob Homer Chris Chamb Liss and Glenn Hubbard still in the lineup they slipped to 88-74 then to 80-82 in 1984. Last year they were 66-96 for their worst finish since 1977, and that was after Many had picked the braves to win the division because they acquired reliever Bruce Sutler. We be been on the losing end for a longtime now Homer said. We won the no West in 1982, but we Haven t done anything since then. We want to sometimes losing Breeds a losing Atti tude and that s Why a manager like Tan army triumphs in interservice Indiantown Gap a. The. Army with three Usa eur stars playing a major role won the interservice women basketball tournament with its third straight Victory Here with an easy 79-68 win Over Navy the army conquered the air force84-69 and then repeated that win 85-60. Aschaffenbur s Yvonne Fleming wild Fie Ken s Angela Armstrong and Mann Heim s Darlene Johnson represented Sarteur in the unblemished March to the title in the double elimination tournament. Johnson and Armstrong were selected for the . Forces team that will compete in the aau National women s tournament april 7-13 in Detroit. A photo Chuck Tanner. Everyone must contribute Ner the eternal Optimist can be a big times organizational problems get in the Way. Ray Miller was hired to manage the twins last june after seven seasons As pitching coach at Baltimore where reworked under one of the game s Best Earl Weaver. He found that a lot of the Little things things Tanner talked about had been ignored. What they had basically done Here was sit around and wait for the Home run. They had built a club for Power and the three run Homer Miller said. They never put a lot of work into the defense. There was no real consensus on the staff on How to pitch anybody. So i implemented what i picked by Many to win the american league West after challenging for it in 1984, the twins wound up tied for fourth,14 games behind Kansas City at season s having talented players like Kent Hrbek Frank Viola Gary Gaetti and Ron Davis Minnesota got off to a 27-35 Start last year under Billy Gardner. They finished 50-50 under Miller. Davis the Relief Pitcher who had struggled Early on was successful in 21 of 22 save opportunities to finish the season and Miller adds we were 22-11 in one run games under had t worked on a lot of the basics he said. I did t like the bunt plays they had. They had no procedures for run Downs cutoffs and relays. They used All the Standard plays but you have to adapt the to your Park and they had the red sox were another one of those disappointing teams. The team understand ably was built to take advantage of the Short Fence in left Field the Green monster with players like Tony armas Jim Rice and Wade Boggs. Picked by some to finish Well up in the american league East if not win it in 1985, the red sox finished 18 /2 games Back of Toronto in fifth. They Haven t won a division title since1975 despite seeing the likes of Carl Yastrzemski Carlton Fisk and Fred Lynn come and go. Boston manager John Mcnamara believes one of the keys to Success is Relief a look at the clubs that contend and they Are usually in the 40s in the save department he says. The red sox had 29 saves last season with Steve Crawford the Leader at 12. So the red sox made a Trade that brought Relief pitchers Calvin Schiraldi and Wes Gardner from the new York mets an Sammy Stewart from Baltimore. We knew we had to do something Mcnamara said. We had no one in the farm system that had distinguished himself so we would feel we could stay with injuries also can play a role in a disappointing season. Boston pitchers Roger Clemens Al Nipper Bruce Kison and Bob Stanley All missed significant portions of the season with injuries As did Rice a Darmas. You come out and try to do the Best Youcan Mcnamara said. You want to set a High Standard but it can sometimes be Tough to keep up. So you do the Best you can and whatever happens the Best example of a team gone belly up was the Montreal expos. On paper they were the team of the Early 80s. On the Field they managed Only one Divi Sion title in 1981, then they were Dis Cromartie and Ellis Valentine two thirds of what Many considered Thebes Outfield in baseball Are Long gone. Third baseman Larry Parrish is Gary Carter is gone. Pitchers Steve Rogers Bill Gullickson and David Palmer Are gone. Virtually All that is left of that team Are outfielders Andre Dawson and Tim Raines who started out As a second have been replaced with Mike Fitzgerald at Catcher Vance Law and Hubie Brooks in the infield Herm win Gingham in Center Field and Joe Hesketh Andy Mcgaffigan Bryn Smith Floyd Youmans and Jay Tibbs on the was As total a reconstruction Job As baseball has had an awful lot of work to do on this club expos general manager Murra Cook said. A photo John Mcnamara. 40 saves needed it was t a situation where you could come in and make a few Small changes. I guess wholesale is a Good word to , manager Buck Rodgers feels that with just a Little More offence the Job willbe close to done. For that purpose Rodgers has hire Bobby Winkles to teach All the nuances of Don t want him just to help Guys hit the Ball put of the Park Rodgers m talking about total offence Bunting hit and run situation hitting. One third four games Are decided by one run and we Are going to work at scoring those runs in alot of that comes Back to what Tanner said it s the Little things that keep teams from winning in big ways.
