Van Valkenburg said it also marked the first time in six years that tournament scoring averages exceeded regular season averages. That makes sense he said. The top teams Are in the tournament but in the last five years holding the Ball was taking  Van Valkenburg said the philosophy of the coaches in the 1986 tournament May have made a bigger difference than the shot clock. This year we had a lot of new teams in the tournament and the Only Way you can score an upset now is to steal the Ball run like hell and overpower a team that Way he said. The Guys who said there would be no upsets because of the time clock have gone into  Van Valkenburg also noted that More tournament teams used Man to Man de lenses and High pressure offensive styles that increased scoring. A lot of coaches were playing zone defences in the past he said. That produces lower  the record for tournament scoring was established in 1970 with 172.6 Points a game an average of 86.3 Points per team. You had Jacksonville notre Dame Iowa. Everybody scoring like crazy said Van Valkenburg. Jacksonville beat Iowa 104-103 in one game that year he said. College teams combined to average 138.5 Points a game during the past Reg ular season virtually the same As in the 1984-85 season he said. Mcaa records show that the metro conference replaced the big eight As the top scoring league during regular season play. Metro teams which include finalist Louisville averaged 77.3 Points a game while big eight teams were Sec Ond at 76.7. Meanwhile University of Houston officials cancelled a news conference intended to announce the appointment of a coach. Officials said they did t yet have anyone to succeed retiring Guy Lewis. Raveling also coached at Washington state compiling a 167-136 record in 11 years. In 1980, he guided Washington state to its first Mcaa appearance completing his stint at the school with a 23-7 record in the 1982-83 season. Morrison had a 103-95 record in seven years at Southern Cal. He resigned March 11, following an 11-17 season. Raveling said his contract still was under negotiation and refused to disclose any terms other than indicating it May be a five year pact. My top priority is As quickly As possible to get us into the Mcaa playoffs he said. At Ohio University Nee 40, said he is resigning to coach at Nebraska. He re places Moe Iba who quit after the Corn huskers lost to Western Kentucky in the first round of the Mcaa tournament. Athletic director Bob Devaney said the terms of Nee s contract had t been finalized. Nee said the big eight conference is undergoing a Renaissance in basketball and is becoming known for something other than football. Big eight basketball is on a Roll Nee said. He said an improving level of play in the conference is one reason he file photo George Raveling. Maximizing his opportunities accepted the Nebraska Job. Nebraska was 19-9 last season and finished in a second place tie in the big eight. Iba s record in six seasons at Nebraska was 107-70. He declined to say Why he quit. Nee said assistant coach fran Trischella would go to Nebraska with him and recommended that another assistant Billy Hahn be named coach at Ohio University. Ohio had a 22-8 record this season. The bobcats were eliminated from the National invitation tournament in the first round by eventual Champion Ohio state. Nee had a 107-67 record at Ohio u. At Houston indications were that Stan Ford coach Tom Davis was the leading candidate to succeed Lewis. Davis was inter viewed by Houston officials March 13 and returned to Houston on wednesday night. Bucs Rhoden impressive against red sox by the associated press right hander Rick Rhoden who has been seeking a Trade away from Pittsburgh since last fall made himself a Little More attractive on the Market thursday when he allowed Only one unearned run in 6% innings in leading the pirates to a 5-2 exhibition Victory Over the Boston red sox. Rhoden gave up five singles struck out three and did t walk a Batter before yield ing to Pat Clements in the seventh. Rookie Mike Diaz led the pirates 11-hit attack with his third Spring Homer and a pair of singles. Sid Bream had two hits. While Rhoden was impressive Boston left hander Bruce Hurst had his worst out ing of the Spring allowing eight singles and walking two batters. Bill Buckner had three hits for Boston. In other exhibition games tigers 8, reds 4 Dave Engle hit a two run Homer and Chet Lemon had a pair of rib doubles for Detroit which got six innings from starter Walt Terrell and shutout Relief by Willie Hernandez and Bill Scherrer. Nick Esasky hit a pair of two run homers baseball Roundup for the reds split squad. Bill Gullickson who missed his last turn with a sore Elbow pitched five innings. Reds 5, Phillies 3 Paul o Neill of the reds hit a three run Homer and had two More hits raising his Spring average to .444. His Home run in the seventh came off loser Tom Hume who gave up All of Cincinnati s runs. Juan Samuel hit a two run Homer for Philadelphia. Cincinnati starter Charles Hudson who gave up 14 runs in 12 previous innings allowed no runs on four hits in five innings and struck out one. Cardinals 3, Blue jays 0 Bob Forsch Todd Worrell and Ken Day Ley combined for a five hitter. Forsch allowed three hits in five innings extending his preseason Streak of scoreless innings to nine. Worrell and Dayley each allowed one hit in two innings of work in completing the cardinals second shutout of the Spring. Dodgers 4, twins 2 left hander Fernando Valenzuela hurled seven scoreless innings to Lead los Angeles. Valenzuela surrendered Only four hits while striking out six and not walking a Batter. Dave Anderson hit a three run Homer off loser John Butcher. Astros 4, expos 2 Glenn Davis had two hits and Nolan Ryan struck out six in five innings for Houston. The astros belted expos starter Andy Mcgaffigan for seven hits and four runs in six innings. Rangers 5, Yankees 4 Curtis Wilkerson slugged a three run Homer in the second inning and Tom Pacio Rek and Steve Buechele hit consecutive Home runs in the fourth for Texas. Orioles 6, braves 3 Rick Dempsey s three run blast High lighted a six run fourth inning for Balti More. Braves starter David Palmer struggled through six innings allowing nine hits. Cubs 10, indians 9 Brian Dayett collected five of Chicago s 20 hits including a key loth inning double. Cleveland had 19 hits and scored six runs on 14 hits in six innings against Chicago starter Steve Trout. Giants 8, Brewers 1 rookies Rob Thompson and will Clark hit Solo Home runs and Chili Davis cracked a three run shot for san Francisco. Davis and Clark homered on consecutive pitches by Milwaukee Rookie Bryan Clutterbuck in a four run seventh inning rally. A s 5, Angels 0 right handers Jose Rijo and Steve Onti Veros combined for a four hitter. Rijo went six innings walking four and striking out one. Ontiveros in his eighth Outing of the Spring hurled no hit Ball Over the final three innings. Yankees 3, expos 1 Phil Niekro went four innings and Al Lowed five hits for another Yankees team playing a split Montreal squad in a night game. Tommy John gave up the Montreal run but then faced the minimum nine Bat ters in the next three innings. Padres 8, mariners 7 Bruce Bochy s Pinch hit bases loaded single scored the winning run in the Lith inning. The mariners blew a 7-0 Lead
