Ellison a 6-foot-9 Center took Over in Side scoring 25 Points and pulling in 11 rebounds As he led no. 7 Louisville to a 72 69 Victory Over top ranked Duke. He was named the most outstanding player in the final four the first freshman so honoured since Utah s Arnie Ferrin in 1944. That s Why we Call him never nervous Pervis " said Sophomore teammate her Bert Crook. Down at the end when we need rebounds he gets  he did scoring eight of the cardinals last 15 Points and gathering two key rebounds that spoiled Duke s Hopes of capping a record sea son with its first National Crown. The Victory was the 17th straight for Louisville which finished at 32-7. And it broke the 21-game winning Streak of the Blue devils who finished 37-3, the most victories in a season in Mcaa history. Louisville although hounded by Duke s Pesky guards Johnny Dawkins and Tommy Amaker took the Lead for Good at 66-65 on Billy Thompson s two Pointer with 2 47 remaining. Ellison then grabbed Jeff Hall s missed shot and put it in with 41 seconds left for a 68-65 advantage. I saw the shot was falling Short Elli son said. I got past everybody and Laid  Ellison assured the Victory with 27 seconds remaining when he rebounded a missed shot by Duke s David Henderson was fouled by Mark Alarie and Sank two free throws to make it 70-65. After Duke scored on rebounds by Jay College basketball Bilas and Danny ferry Louisville guard Milt Wagner sealed it with two free throw with two seconds left. Led by the quickness of All american Dawkins and Amaker the Atlantic coast conference champions forced 14 Louisville turnovers in the first half in building a 37 34 Lead at the intermission. They Are a great duo Louisville guard Jeff Hall said of Dawkins and Amaker. We the Cardinal backcourt looked real bad in the first half. We knew it was up to us to do something in the second if we were going to win this  Louisville surged at the beginning of the second half and went ahead 42-41 on Crook s tap in to give the cardinals their first Lead since taking a 4-0 advantage at the outset. Dawkins then hit three straight jump shots including a three Pointer for a 48-42 Duke Lead. Alarie then made two free throws to match Duke s biggest Lead of the second half 54-48. But Ellison and Wagner spearheaded Louisville s comeback. Wagner St three Point play Cut the Cardi nals deficit to 61-60 with 5 33 remaining and the Lead see sawed until Thomspon s jumper at 2 47 sealed Duke s Fate. Thompson a 6-7 senior added 13 Points for Louisville while Crook had 10. Wagner who entered the game with a career total of 1,825 Points scored Only nine almost six Points under his average. Dawkins the leading scorer in Duke s history finished with 24 Points. Henderson added 14, Alarie 12 and Amaker 11. Louisville which has been in four of the last seven final fours previously won the Crown in 1980. The metro conference Champion finished strongly after playing the toughest non conference schedule in the country winning its last 17 games and 21of its last 22. The cardinals seeded no. 2 in the West knocked off Drexel Bradley North Carolina Auburn and Louisiana state to reach the final. Duke with a nucleus of four seniors who had been 11-17 in their freshman year were top seeded in the East and beat Mississippi Valley state old Dominion de Paul Navy and no. 2 Kansas. The Blue devils Only previous losses were at North Carolina on Jan. 18 and at Georgia tech in their next game three Days later. Freeman a sports writer Dallas Louisville coach Denny Crum decided that if the cardinals lost the College basketball National championship game monday night Duke All America guard Johnny Dawkins was t going to Bethe player who beat them. Crum s decision to change defences late in the cardinals 72-69 championship Victory Over the Blue devils proved to be the turning Point in the game. Crum switched Milt Wagner off guard ing Dawkins and gave the Job to Jeff Hall. I wanted a fresher player on him Crum said. We wanted to deny him the Ball and we went to a 1-3 zone with Man for Man defense on Dawkins to keep the Ball out of his hands. It was a calculated risk but Worth taking.". A risk Worth taking against Duke Dawkins who finished with 24 Points did not score in the final 3 08 of the game and the tenacious Louisville defense Al Lowed him Only one shot in that time. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said Louisville did a Good Job on Dawkins. We did t get away from him. Louis Ville just did a Good Job of stopping him Krzyzewski said. Other players were open and when we have other avenues we never go to just one person. But we just missed our shots we normally  Dawkins scored three Quick baskets Early in the second half with his last one coming with 15 19 to play. He did t score again until he made two foul shots with 3 08 left on the clock and never made another Fiel goal. Early in the second half i just took it upon myself to do things and i just did a lot of things one on one Dawkins said. After that i settled Down and started working within the team  Dawkins said the cardinals were playing a defense that he called either a Diamond and two or a  they kept a fresh Guy on me All the time and i just could t get open Dawkins said. Unfortunately we had Good shots but they did t  Crum said we out rebounded them in the second half and that was also a big Factor. The game was not a thing of Beauty but both teams played great defense. We just finally decided that if we were going to lose we did t want Dawkins to be the one who beat us Crum said. David Henderson had most of the open shots for Duke and missed three in the final three minutes. He also had a critical turn Over As the Blue devils went cold at the wrong time in the search for their first National title
