European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - April 2, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Wednesday april 2, 1986 the stars and stripes Page 25 racing Roundup pique s win a vef Well gift to Boss in our racing Roundup column published on new year s Day we predicted that Brazil s Nelson Piquet would win the 1986 world driving championship for the Williams Honda team. With Piquet s impressive Victory late last month in the brazilian grand prix it s a Case of so far so Good and it s obvious that Piquet could take top honors this season. Still one race does t make a season and it s a Long Way to go. Despite the brazilian s Brilliant performance in the 1986 season opener there remains a major setback with team Boss Frank Williams facing a Long recovery from his serious Auto Acci Dent injuries. How this will affect the Williams Honda organization in the Long run cannot be deter mined but Piquet s Victory in Brazil As Well As Hiss scoring fastest Lap came As the Best possible get Well present for Williams. And As englishman Ken Tyrrell said in a pre race statement there is Little sentiment in this sport but Nelson Piquet i Don t think anyone would begrudge a Williams Victory in on the Grid Piquet had held up a message for Wil Liams who was watching the race on television from his Hospital bed. Piquet s message read wish you were Here Frank after the race the brazilian Driver admitted that it was an emotional incredible Day for me. I wanted so much to win this one for Frank and i was Able to do it. It s a great Start for me with this it was Piquet s first race for the Williams team after Many seasons spent with Brabham where he won two world driving championships. Piquet s major Challenge this season prob ably will come from his countryman Ayrton Senna the no. 1 Driver on the British Lotus team. Senna established his credentials in the brazilian grand prix with a second place finish As Well As pole position in his Lotus Renault while his new teammate Johnny Dumfries of Scotland placed ninth in his formula one debut. Not a bad showing for Lotus. Defending world Champion Alain Prost of France meanwhile served notice that he will be Tough again this season moving up from ninth place on the starting Grid to third and challenging hard for second place when the engine let go on his Mclaren tag porsche at one third distance. The showing of the two French Ligier Renault cars at Rio was surprisingly Strong French Drivers Jacques Laffite and Rene Arnoux placing third and fourth their Only worries being fuel consumption. That also was a worry for Many teams including Lotus with this year s fuel allowance Only 195 liners compared to last season s 220. Ligier s team manager Gerard Larrousse said after the race that Laffite and Arnoux could have gone faster but there was a fuel consumption problem and they had to slow Down so As not to use too much. But that was the Only problem we in qualifying Arnoux was fourth and Laffite fifth so the Ligier cars and Drivers Are competitive All around and they la be in the running this season. The Ferrari and Brabham Bow teams proved disappointing both Ferrari cars failing to finish and Elio de Anggelis of Italy managing Only an eighth. Place in his new Low Slung Brabham three laps Down. Italy s Riccardo Patrese in the other Brabham retired at the one third Mark with engine problems. The British Tyrrell team showed Promise with englishman Martin Brundle placing fifth in the Tyrrell Renault and Frenchman Philippe Streiff finishing seventh. Streiff has been signed on for the 1986 season so the american Eddie Cheever who had been named As a Tyrrell Driver on a provisional basis is out of Luck this season where formula one is concerned. The Tyrrell team should do Well this year As it finally has some Strong sponsorship from the data Gen eral firm. So it would come As no Surprise if Tyrrell wins a race or two As both Brundle and Streiff have a lot of potential. With the first grand prix of the season now run the Points standings for the world driving championship Are As follows Piquet 9 Senna 6 Laffite 4 Arnoux 3 Brundle 2 Gerhard bar Ger of aus Tria i. The formula one constructors championship is led by Williams with 9 Points while Liger is next with 7. Lotus has 6, Tyrrell 2, and Benetton 1. The next race is the Spanish grand prix on april 13 a week from sunday at the new circuit in Jerez de la Frontera just Northwest of Cadiz and Rota. The stars and stripes basketball takes its place As Glamour sport by Hal Bock Dallas a there was a time not Long ago when College basketball routinely took a Back seat in University athletic departments a distinctly poor relation to More glamorous football programs. It was football that generated the most Revenue football that had the he Tiest Bud get football that attracted the Best athletes. Basketball jolted every decade or so by gambling scandals had a sort of stepchild status. That has changed drastically. Consider that As recently As 10 years ago a trip to the final four was Worth $143,657 for each of the participating teams compared with the $835,300 that Duke Kansas Louisville and Louisiana state Are taking Home this year. The increased revenues spawned by burgeoning television rights fees has turned basketball into a Glamour game. And the Glamour has created More ambitious pro Grams a wider distribution of the available Talent and parity throughout the sport. Institutions see athletics As a vehicle that helps them and they allow programs to happen said Eddie Sutton of Kentucky the associated press coach of the year. So you have a Cleveland state and an Arkansas Little Rock upset winners in the Early rounds of the Mcaa tournament. You get two great players and three House mothers and you re More and More schools Are moving into basketball s first rank producing wide spread balance in the sport which has not had a repeat Champion since Urcla s string of seven straight titles ended in 1973. Coach John wooden who directed that dynasty said schools should be Able to duplicate his achievement even with today s distribution of Talent. It s easier now because there Are More Good players he said. He added it s what you do with what you have that determines your Success. With so Many Good players you should have a better Chance at holy Cross coach George Blaney said there were perhaps 10 teams that were legitimate final four teams this year. But there Are maybe 50 or 60 More teams who could fit anywhere in the next 10. That s How balanced the game has be come he said. Parity is the in word this season said Georgetown s John Thompson president of the National association of basketball coaches. Potsdam state the division Iii Champion was the Only undefeated team this season and the first one since Indiana in 1976. That s the biggest a year ago Thompson s hoyas were one of three big East teams in the final four. This year the final four survivors came from four conferences another example of parity. That wider distribution of Talent came about gradually Over time with More expo sure and better kids Thompson said. It also came about with the limitation of 15 scholarships per program. Kentucky used to have 25 or 30 scholarship players walking around Sutton said. Now if those kids can t be there they re someplace no one has a bad team anymore it seems said coach . Newton of Vanderbilt. We were a seventh place team and lost by 10 Points to Duke and by one Point to Iowa state. We were a pretty Good team. Ohio state was a seventh place team in the big ten and they won the Frieder of Michigan last season s a coach of the year said we be proven in the last three weeks that anything can Hap Frieder said the increased television exposure and the year round basketball Camps have contributed to the wide number of improved programs. Parity is great he said. The 64-team tournament is terrific. Look at the excite ment. And it s going to continue. That s Why you see coaches fired. Everybody can t win 25 games every year. It s a difficult business. That s what makes it there Are More balanced teams a lot of very Good teams said Rollie Massimino who took a very Good Villanova team to the National championship a year ago. The Talent has been spread by the number of scholarships a school is allowed to coach Jim Boeheim of Syracuse sees the parity trend continuing. There were a lot of Good teams this year and there will be More Good teams next year he said. I see it getting More wide open every year. The freshmen eligible Rule and the scholarships limitation contribute to it. There Are More Good players than Ever. Not great players but still outstanding ones. More teams believe they can win. Arkan Sas Little Rock which eliminated notre Dame in the tournament should t think they can win but they do. Good teams think they can Georgetown s Thompson knows exactly what Boeheim Means. Sometimes teams play to prevent losing instead of going out to win he said. Every pass every Basket they re More careful. The Normal flow is not and that s How upsets begin. Take a Good team and give them a Pat Rick Ewing or a David Robinson and they win Boeheim said. A Good team finds a player like that and they can dominate. Get a player like that and your team moves Georgia s Hugh Durham also supports the Ewing Robinson Man in the Middle theory. There s More parity because there Are not that Many dominant big men and there Are so Many basketball players around he said. There is no Patrick no Ralph Sampson no Bill Walton. Without a dominant big Man and with so Many who Are capable of playing it creates More Good teams. If you could find out what caused Rob Inson to grow six inches from 6-5 to 6-11 after he enrolled at the naval Academy and bottle it you could get out of coaching and sell six Inch
