A Pete Herrmann chief assistant to Navy head basketball coach Paul Evans for the past six years has been named to succeed Evans Navy director of athletics . Coppedge announced wednesday. Herrmann 37, came to the Academy with Evans in 1980 and has played an integral part in Navy s Success in recent years particularly with the recruiting and defensive style of play Coppedge said. We believe that Pete Herrmann can sustain the excellent program which Paul Evans structured during his six years at Navy Coppedge said. He has shown he is a diligent worker and some one who has a great Deal of loyalty to the naval Academy and we in turn have loyalty to  Evans resigned last week to take a position As head basketball coach at the University of Pittsburgh. Evans guided Navy this year to its most successful season. The midshipmen 30-5, made it to the final eight in the Mcaa tournament before losing to Duke 71-50 in the East regional. In the 1974-75 season he coached the Hobart College freshmen to a 15-3 record. He then moved to mid lakes in 1975. As an undergraduate at Geneseo state Herrmann lettered in both basketball and baseball and twice captained the Blue knights baseball team. He earned most valuable player baseball honors in 1969 and 1970 and was named to the new York All state baseball team in 1970. Bobby Dotson an assistant coach at Louisville also questioned the need for the three Point goal. The game was going awfully Good. I Don t see Why they need mess with it. I can t understand Why they would put something like this in. I think it s  of the use of instant replay Dotson said i think there is a time for it to be used but not on a judgment  Steitz emphasized that instant replays would be used Only to Correct mistakes made by scorers and timers and not for any officiating Calls. Steitz said an incident that occurred in Kansas City during the Mcaa Midwest regional two weeks ago was a Factor in the decision to use instant replays. A clock malfunctioned causing 15 seconds to be lost during a game Between Kan Sas and Michigan state. The incident was blamed for Blem Ishing the Jay Hawks Victory when there is a problem area that we Haven t addressed Well try to address it see Mcaa on Page 23 celtics Down pistons to set Aba record from press dispatches Boston Boston s starting front court of Robert Parish Larry Bird and Kevin Mchale combined for 83 Points and the celtics set an Aba single season record with their 28th consecutive Home Victory by beating the Detroit pistons 122-106 wednesday night. Parish had a season High 30 Points Bird 29 and Mchale 24 As the celtics stretched their Overall winning Streak to 13 games tying their Mark for the longest in the Aba this season. Parish also had 18 rebounds. The celtics erased the 36-year-old league record of 27 straight Home victories in a single season set by the min Neapolis lakers in 1949-50. Philadelphia holds the Mark for More than one season with 36 in 1967-68. The pistons played without guard Isiah Thomas who Barb Windup missed his third consecutive game with a pulled left Ham string. They were led by Vinnie Johnson with 20 Points and John Long with 17. Boston was leading 69-63 when Mchale s stuff launched a 13-3 run that made the score 82-66 with 3 54 left in the third Quarter. Mchale had six Points in that Span of 4 04. But Detroit rallied with an 11-2 spurt sparked by Earl Cureton s five Points to make the score 86-79. Boston led 88-79 after three quarters and Detroit came no closer inthe final period. The Victory gave the celtics a 37-1 Home record equalling the Mark for most Home victories in a season achieved twice each by Philadelphia and the los Angeles lakers. If Boston wins its remaining six games it will tie the Aba Mark for Best single season record 69-13, set by the lakers in 1971-72. Tony Campbell scored 10 Points in the second period to help Detroit whittle a 37-25 deficit Down to 57-55 at  other Aba action 76ers 93, kicks 87 Philadelphia Charles Barkley had 18 Points and 19 rebounds As Philadelphia pulled away in the final period to beat new York. In addition to Vancouver the Chicago Blackhawk and new York rangers fell Short of their targets. Chicago missed a Chance to win the Norris division by losing to Minnesota 7-5, and new York could have clinched a Patrick division playoff berth had it not lost 5-2 to Philadelphia. Vancouver could have clinched a playoff spot in the smythe division. Coffey scored his 46th and 47th goals to break the nil record for goals by a de tense Man set by Boston s Bobby Orr in 1974  75. He also assisted on two other goals and his four Points gave him 137 for the season two Short of Orr s 1970-71 Mark. I once thought those records would be impossible to get Coffey said. It was a tremendous feeling he said of his record breaking goal at 2 44 of the second period. Coffey scored at 19 37 of the first period to tie Orr. Mike Mcphee scored twice for Montreal. Mcphee s first goal came 52 seconds after Naslund notched his 42nd of the year at 17 05 of the second period. Mcphee scored his Sec Ond Midway through the third period.
