It is a struggle that dates to the 8th Century and St. Hubertus then Bishop of Liege and now Patron Saint of Hunters who was believed to have special Healing and inoculation Powers against the dreaded disease. The truth of his ability will probably never be known but his attribute although perhaps Only legend Ary is one of the reasons Hubertus was loved by Many people including Hunters during his lifetime. Real Progress against rabies was made just Over 100 years ago by Louis Pasteur who developed a vaccine that was used to save the life of a Young boy bitten by a Rabid dog. Previously the infection would have meant certain gruesome death. Vaccines have been improved and refined since the Days of Pasteur but timeliness of treatment remains critical. If the disease progresses in a person exposed to the Point where it can be diagnosed clearly cure is impossible. If bitten by an animal a person should immediately seek a doctor s advice. Anyone who has frequent Contact with wild animals should consider annual immunization Best accomplished by going to a local doctor or Hospital. Three injections Are Given initially Over a period of three months. They Are painless and cause Little Mark Swearengen reaction. One injection is needed each year thereafter. Immunizations May be possible at medical facilities after consultation with a physician. Obviously pets should be immunized against rabies. According to a report in International wildlife mag Azine raccoons Are being immunized in the Eastern . In an Effort to curb the disease tallow coated sponges soaked with vaccine Are dropped from planes in areas of Large Raccoon populations. Researchers at the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia Are using the technique which is similar to a method used in Canada to immunize foxes. In the German state of Hessen the social ministry re ports initial Success with an inoculation Experiment that used special bait to transmit a vaccine to foxes. Many animals took the bait and Are generally considered immunized. It s still too Early to measure Overall Success but the Experiment will continue. Authorities Hope this will be a step toward reduction of the disease in Western Europe. These Are Only examples of the fight against the Dis ease which together with improved vaccines will surely show great advances in coming years. It will be a Long time before rabies is whipped but with continued research and efforts to immunize wild and Domestic animals the prominence of the disease will gradually decrease and our Contact with animals will be less dangerous.
