Out of Africa is the Story of danish writer Karen Blixen s life As the owner of a kenyan Coffee Plantation. Sort of. It tells of her unfortunate marriage to a Cousin Baron Bror Blixen. Sort of. And it recounts her relationship with the British adventurer Denys Finch Hatton. Sort of. This Story of Blixen s sojourn in an exotic place worlds away from her Homeland is no documentary but director Stanley Pollack never meant it to be. Pollack s aim was not to retell Blixen s life Story detail for detail but to re create the mood of her writings a combination of warm remembrance and a sad sense of loss. At that he has succeeded beyond measure. Meryl Streep plays Karen Blixen vrho married her Lover s brother out of spite. It s a role made for Streep a specialist in Headstrong women. Klaus Maria Brandauer As Bror accomplishes the nearly impossible making the compulsive philanderer Karen marries a sympathetic character. Robert Redford playing Karen s love Finch Hatton is nothing so much As Robert Redford but he s charming and witty and ultimately it does t matter that he bears no similarity to the character he s playing. But the True Star of the film is Africa itself. Pollack has treated the continent lovingly tenderly practically caressing the Countryside with the camera. As he lingers on the Lush landscapes brilliantly Green As far As the Eye can see the audience can truly feel Blixen s love of Africa. Everything in the film is Beautiful the Plantation studded with Young Coffee sprouts a dam bursting in a rainstorm sending its water Home to Mombasa the sight of Redford washing Streep s hair in the Middle of the wilderness even the fire that destroys the Coffee processing factory is Beautiful. Out of Africa has been criticized for not holding fast to the truth but such quibbling misses the Point. This is film making in the grand tradition a movie with sweeping scenery Majestic music and a cast just Short of thousands. It does t pretend to be historically accurate and it in t. Redford unlike Finch Hatton could hardly be mistaken for British also unlike Finch Hatton he s still got a full crop of Golden hair. And even though it s True that Finch Hatton always took a gramophone with him on safari the music he played for the animals was t Mozart As it was in the film it was Stravinsky. To enjoy the movie and it should be enjoyed it s necessary to toss considerations such As these aside. Take the film on the terms it sets for itself As the Story of a Strong and opinionated woman who journeyed to a land far from her Home and came to love it and its people.
