European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - April 20, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Sunday april 20, 1986 the stars and stripes Page 9 profile in leadership Pentagon ceremony had duo seeing lots of stars by Don Tate staff writer t s not every Day that a sergeant and a lieutenant go to Washington to appear before the Powers that be. But when staff sgt. Charles Waters won the army s Success in leadership award for enlisted men after 1st it. Robert Naething eloquently wrote him up the award was presented at the Pentagon in a room where general officers Dine. Neither one of us expected to see so Many stars Naething said. There were 19 people in there. Three High ranking civilians including the Secretary of the army. We counted them. There were 15 generals. There were three four Star generals including the chief of staff general John a Wickham. There were 10 three Star generals and two two Star generals. The lowest ranking people in that room were the two Star generals and this one colonel. And us. But were we daunted yes. We wondered How does a colonel fit in Here he told us look a colonel at the Pentagon is like a private in your unit. All i m Here for is to see that the movie projector runs right before we went in another colonel told us men there s nothing to be nervous about Side they re on your so we were admitted into the room. All this blazing brass is assembled before us. A huge picture of general Macarthur is gazing Down upon us. There s Only seating in there enough for about 25 peo ple. Them. And us. My purpose there is to give a talk on sergeant Waters of about 10 min utes. Believe me when i first wrote him up i had no idea it would come to this. I was really nervous. I wrote Down a lot of notes in Case i blanked out. They were finishing lunch but i was too nervous to eat anything. They had turned out the lights and shown a film. And then it was my turn. General Wickham called out lieutenant Naething Usa eur get up Here and Tell us about ser it. Naething Geant Waters All the lights Are still out except the Little ones on the lectern. I set my notes up there and Start in talking doing s8.s photo by Gus Schueller staff sgt. Charles Waters six year Veteran and Winner of the enlisted category for Best leadership Success Story of 1985. A meat and potatoes7 kind of Guy hat s his style Tough aggressive out front does he Knock Heads kick Butts give noisy Arm waving Teeth gnashing Rah Rah talks to get through to his troops tankers after All Are not timid Maidens staff sgt. Charles Waters 26, a six year Veteran and Winner of the enlisted category for Best leadership Success Story for 1985 in the army is a meat and potatoes kind of Guy according to his platoon Leader. When i first looked at sergeant Waters i thought of no this can t be the Leader they were telling me about " said 1st it. Robert Naething. Because they had been going on about what a great Sharp Guy was coming. I pictured somebody like rambo or sergeant Rock striding in. And then Here comes this Fel Low who looks like just a Plain old i. He s from Kentucky. And he Speaks kind of Plain. And a Little slow. And he moves slow. And he does t go around spouting any hard nosed general Patton philosophy or anything. He just. Talks. He does t make that first impression does t glitter like some Guys do. I d Call him one of those Sleeper if Waters was t exactly a Glossy print Naething said he soon came across As solid Black and White. His style is. Well like on his Way Home every night he would Stop in the billets and Check on his Guys. How you doing How s it going any problems i can help you with or say his Crew has been out on something and they re coming in to eat hell just slip to the Back of the line. He won t say anything. But he makes sure his Guys eat before he does. He won t make any big production of it. And if you re not watching you d never know he did it. And Down at the motor Pool. Let s say his men had to repair or clean up something and they re going to be late. He never leaves before the last Man before the Job is finished. Again no big production of it. He just does it. He s meat and potatoes always coming up with ideas devising ways to make things work better. And they do work better. You Don t want to discourage initiative like Don Tate everything i can to keep my voice steady. No sooner arc the first words out than the waiter trips Over the wire leading from the lectern Breaks the plug off and the Light goes out. Of me. For the second time i see my career ending Over old d-33. What i can t see Are my notes. The curtains Are pulled but there s just enough Light seeping through that 1 can make out Waters staring at me and he is somewhere Between real nervous and trying not to laugh out loud. I m there in the dark with 15 generals and general Macarthur waiting for my wonderful words. 1 Start in again and my voice is croaking so bad i m practically yodelling going . I babble in the dark for about 10 minutes. And some How luckily luckily for my career 1 remember enough to finish. Waters got through his part of it in Good shape Al though his voice sounded funny too. Then he got a Nice picture taken with a plaque and certificate. On one Side of him is the Secretary of the army and on the other Side is the army chief of staff. And in the Middle there s our Good old sergeant from Kentucky with a big Grin on his face. So i guess everything turned out pretty world today soviets criticize .
