They said normally they Are reduced but in this particular Case the butter was received Frozen from Kaiserslautern and could be kept indefinitely just like govern ment surplus butter we Don t know How Long they be stored the butter so therefore no Price reduction for land o then they proceeded to Tell me How the dates stamped on cold cuts were ignored because they re kept Frozen. I then asked them Why Darmstadt could sell land o lakes butter dated sept. 23, 1985, for 90 cents which i purchased a few weeks earlier. They said maybe the but Ter was t when i further asked them Why a layer of butter came off the stick with the paper they said All Frozen credit card catch i want to thank you for the letter and answer on credit card users in a recent Edi Tion. Freezing significantly increases the shelf life of certain foods by slowing Down the natural chemical changes and alterations in flavor color and texture that eventually occurs in food products. Freezing does not completely halt these changes it Only extends the product s shelf life. It does not make food last indefinitely. We Don t require them to uniquely Date or code these products because we feel any additional Cost in having them deviate from their Normal com Mercial practices is an extra expense our customers do not need. We do use the dates or codes on the chilled products we have shipped Frozen to Monitor their age and condition and to ensure they Are being rotated and sold with in manufacturer s established extended shelf lives which Are provided to our commissary officers. In closing we sell open dated Merchan Dise that has had its shelf life extended by freezing and is still a Quality wholesome product at its regular Price. Help to quit smoking available in the last year or so i cannot remember picking up any newspaper that has not addressed the subject of smoking. It has been proven to be a health Hazard and a Public nuisance. I cannot cite the statistics but it has also been proven that the percentage of smokers in the military Community is much higher than in the civil Ian population. I am a smoker and at times i am Dis gusted with myself. I would really like to quit and i do try but it never lasts for Long. You smokers will know As i do it s just not that easy to quit. You non smokers can Call me weak or whatever you want. The Point i want to address is the fact that it is not easy to kick any dependency including tobacco. The military Only offers help in this area in the Way of pamphlets at a local health care facility., now if you have a dependency problem with drugs or alcohol there Are programs for you. If you have financial woes there is counselling. If you Are overweight or out of shape there Are programs for you too Etc. Why does the military continue to neglect the idea of counselling programs for its members who smoke there Are organizations in the states that offer programs to help you learn How to quit smoking if you can afford the $200-500 fee for a six week course. I have seen the results of programs such As Smo Kenders. These programs Are pain less and they do work. The people who teach these courses normally have been through the process of learning to quit smoking. And it is a process which involves very intense physical emotional and lifestyle changes. It seems Only reasonable to me that As such a fierce promoter of Good health the military should incorporate into their medical system a few of these quitting smoking teachers the same Way they have incorporated lamaze teachers into the system. Lynn g. Lilly bad Kissinger Germany editor s note capt. Leslie Brousseau health fitness consultant 7th medical come replies giving up smoking can be difficult for Many people. The 7th medical come of fers a variety of services to help break the habit self help materials group programs nicotine gum and the annual great Amer ican smoke out. The fact is that Over 90 percent of smokers who quit smoking do so on their own without guidance or direction. For this reason we have put a great Deal of Effort into making self help materials available at All of our hospitals and health clinics. Every army Hospital also offers a for Mal group smoking cessation program similar to the one mentioned in the letter. Instructors Are health professionals who have attended a training program. Courses vary slightly from Hospital to Hospital some consisting of an intense five Day program and others a More relaxed seven week program. All programs Are based on behavioural modification principles and include Dis Cussion about diet exercise and stress management. Most group programs Are free however some charge a nominal fee. Programs Are open to All Active duty sol Diers their families and civilians. We realize that not All smokers who would like to take advantage of such a program Jive close enough to a Hospital to make attending classes practical. In the Frankfurt area group programs offered in Many of the communities Distant from the Hospital met with a very disappointing turn out and have since been discontinued. We Are presently examining self paced video programs to determine if they can serve As an alternative to group programs or pamphlets. Anyone desiring assistance in quitting smoking should Contact the fitness Facilitator through the Hospital commander s office at the nearest army Hospital. But one not too Bright Sis Ter in Law phoned me every night of the 29 Days he was in the Hospital to ask How her brother was. My smart sister in Law did the right thing. She got her brother s phone number and also the name of his Day nurse. She called the Hospital every morning. Then she called the rest of the family including this dumb Cluck and gave them the update. After i dragged myself Home from the Hospital at 9 p.m., i d fall in bed and the phone would ring. It was the idiot who Al ready knew How her brother was but she called anyway. How do you account for such irrational behaviour . In a. Dear . Granted your sister in Law was compulsive about calling but no doubt she was deeply concerned and Felt better after she talked to you. Your hostility sounds deep rooted and is probably related to something that happened Long before your husband became ill. Retract your claws Sis. They could be dangerous
