What happened yesterday monday got a few peo ple fired up and we wanted to go out and beat them Scott Bailes said tuesday night after he pitched a five hitter for the second shutout of his career to give the indians a 3-0 Victory Over the Oakland athletics in the first game of a double header. The indians were openly upset at Oakland Pitcher Dennis eckersely who shouted at Cleveland s Ron Al round Washington after striking him out to end the athletics 16-inning Victory on monday. Both benches cleared briefly As Washington ran toward Eckersley but no punches were thrown. The Way Eckersley showed us up got a lot of us fired up Bailes said. These Guys did t care that they had played 16 innings. Everybody just wanted to go. In the opener Bailes 7-7, walked one and struck out three in his fifth Complete game of the year and his first Victory in five starts since june 7. The left hander retired 16 straight batters during one stretch before Javier hit a Lead off single in the eighth. The indians took a 1-0 Lead against Dave Stewart 11-7, in the fifth when Franco singled and scored on Carter s two out triple. Hall led off the sixth with a bunt single and Snyder hit Stewart s first pitch for his 18th Home run. Stewart is 3-7 since May 8 after an 8-0 Start. He allowed eight hits in pitching a Complete game. In other Al games Yankees 5, rangers 3 Arlington Texas new York scored All its runs in the first inning including two on consecutive walks with the bases loaded As new York downed Texas. Reliever Tim Stoddard retired Scott Fletcher the Only Batter he faced on a Fly Ball with the bases loaded to end the game. Tommy John yielded two runs and six hits in six innings but it took three relievers to protect the 284th Victory of his career As the 45-year-old left hander tied Ferguson Jenkins for 22nd place on the All time Victory  Victory pulled the Yankees within 1 /2 games of first place Detroit in the Al East. The Victory was the 13th in the last 17 games for the dodgers while the loss was the eighth in the last 11 games for the cardinals. Hershiser 13-3, allowed seven hits and All three St. Louis runs in seven innings. Tim Belcher blanked the cardinals for the final two innings for his fourth save. The dodgers never trailed scoring three runs in the first inning after St. Louis starter Danny Cox 2-4, retired the first two  Gibson started the rally by drawing a walk before Marshall was hit by a  then doubled to right Field for a 2-0 Lead and Mike Scioscia followed with double to right Center scoring Shelby. Tom Brunansky and Terry Pendleto Nhit consecutive homers with two outs in the fourth to make it 3-2. No Roundup it was the 12th Homer for Brunansky since he was traded to St. Louis by Minnesota on april 22. Pendleton s Homer was the first since june 17 by a Cardinal other than Brunansky. The dodgers made it 5-2 in the fifth on a two out single by Gibson and a Homer by Marshall his 10th of the year. In other no games giants 9, cubs 0 san Francisco Terry Mulhol land pitched a six hitter in his first major league Start since 1986 As the giants beat error prone Chicago. Mulholland 1-0, recalled from the giants aaa team in Phoenix when Mike Krukow was placed on the disabled Lis sunday also scored two runs As the giants took a 4-0 first inning Lead off cubs starter Calvin Schiraldi 4-7. Mulholland walked one and struck out two in tossing his first career Complete game. Will Clark drove in two runs with a first inning double As the giants scored three times before Schiraldi could get an out.
