His late father Robert Briscoe was elected lord mayor in 1956 and proved such a hit that he was Given a second term in 1961. Bush is the kind of Man i want to follow me Reagan told a group of conservatives at the old executive office building. He said Bush would continue the conservative revolution begun under Reagan. Bush was travelling to his adopted Home state of Texas wednesday for a meeting of the league of United latin american citizens the largest hispanic civil rights organization in the country. Dukakis on tuesday brought in sen. Albert Gore or. Of Tennessee and rep. Richard Gephardt of Missouri for face to face talks in Boston and wednesday he was meeting with Hamilton. Gephardt said he d take the Job if it were offered but Gore would not comment. The former Dukakis rivals treated him harshly Dur ing the heat of the primary Campaign but both eventually endorsed the Massachusetts governor. Dukakis is also to travel to Arizona Friday to meet with another former rival Bruce Babbitt. Aides said Dukakis was seeking Babbitt s advice but was not considering him for the vice presidential nomination. Jesse Jackson who spent the july fourth Holiday with Dukakis dismissed contenders other than him self. The others under consideration Are unknown quantities beyond their districts and beyond their Home states Jackson said in Boston before leaving for new York where he was holding a series of editorial Board meetings wednesday. The private sessions with prospective running mates fuelled speculation that the certain democratic Nomi Nee was moving closer to naming a running mate. Meese s resignation tuesday was Welcome news to the Bush Campaign which viewed the attorney Gener Al s Legal problems As a  Dukakis who has frequently made an Issue of ethics problems in the Reagan administration called the Meese resignation Long overdue. Although fiscal year 1988 expired last thursday there is still no plan in place to close the year end deficit. Senate ways and Means chairwoman Patricia Mcgovern confirmed tuesday that the 1988 budget is at least $450 million in deficit due to disappointing tax collections in june. There is also no budget in place for the new fiscal year making it difficult for the administration to run the government. Moore said this time Mcconnell apparently stripped the ends of a three stranded electrical Cord placed one end into a Wall outlet and then used himself to make a full circuit by attaching the exposed end to his  it was not known How Mcconnell obtained the Cord but such items Are usually purchased by inmates at the jail s commissary Moore said. Moore said a note believed to be writ ten by Mcconnell was found on a table next to Mcconnell s bed. The note was addressed to his wife Mary Gantt said Dick Deguerin his former attorney. But it appears it might possibly be a suicide  following his March suicide attempt Mcconnell said he was despondent Over delays in his court proceedings. His trial was scheduled for july 19 and he had been in jail since nov. 17 on a $750,000 Bond. Mcconnell surrendered to Federal authorities when he got off a plane from mex Ico after having been missing for More than a year. He and five associates were indicted last october on charges of plotting to de fraud Texas National Bank Post Oak an Home savings association of $4.2 million to $5.7 million by claiming to own prop erty in which they had no interest. Loans approved by the institutions and backed by property the defendants did not own were tunnelled to Mcconnell through fronts prosecutors alleged. Mcconnell a one time multimillionaire said he had 35 cents in his pocket when he was arrested. He was assigned a Federal Public defender because of Lack of Money. His holdings which his wife Esti mated to be Between $300 million and $500 million Are being liquidated under chapter 11 and chapter 7 of the . Bankruptcy , who made his Fortune in Houston amassed hundreds of rental properties and development projects Here and in Galveston. His most ambitious project was a planned 440-acre resort called grand Beach on Galveston Island. But before the resort s first building could be completed his Empire began to crumble and Mcconnell filed for Protection from creditors in october 1986. A court appointed trustees report said Mcconnell and the 10 companies included in the bankruptcy filing owed $427 million against $281 million in assets. Two Loans listed in the indictment one at a Houston Bank and another at a savings and loan were Only part of a larger scheme to defraud lending institutions of at least $ 162 million authorities claimed
