Bush was Busy wooing women voters with an ambitious child care proposal As yet another poll pointed up his need to close the gender  Dukakis and run Ning mate Lloyd Bentsen visited the last of five states on their first Campaign swing As political partners. Bush won Praise for a $2.2 billion child care plan he unveiled before a group of professional women. But when he finished speaking Many in the Audi ence broke into chants of or a a reference to the equal rights Amend ment which the vice president opposes. Dukakis who supports abortion rights was heckled by anti abortion pro testers in St. Louis where he attended Church services with Bentsen. Bush accompanied by former transportation Secretary Elizabeth Dole addressed the National convention of business and professional women s clubs in Albuquerque n.m., where his proposal on child care was favourably received even though his stand on the Era was not. The proposal initially affecting Only Low income families would eventually apply to All families with children younger than 4 in which at least one Parent worked he said. As Dukakis and Bentsen entered a Church in downtown St. Louis about 100 demonstrators held up signs and chanted from across the Street in protest of Dukakis support for a woman s right to have an abortion. They asked in uni son hey Mike How Many babies did you kill today although anti abortion protesters have sprinkled the crowd in previous Dukakis rallies Over recent Days it was the largest and most visible opposition he has faced since becoming his party s nominee last week. Dukakis did not acknowledge the protesters but later told reporters his position on abortion has been consistent for 25 years. It s a difficult very serious very important ethical and moral judgment Dukakis said at a news conference inside protesters carrying signs opposing his stand on abortion shout at Michael Dukakis outside a Church in St. Louis. Dukakis and Bentsen got off to a run Ning Start in the first weekend after their nomination. They visited five states including the big battlegrounds of califor Nia and Texas. Dukakis returned to Boston on Sun Day night where he was welcomed by about 150 people at Logan International Airport. Bentsen meanwhile flew Back to Washington. Bush returned to Washington on Sun Day night after a five Day Campaign swing that took him to eight states.
