Just As she had her intentions Berta had her uncertainties. She planned on following the train route but the condition of the neighbouring roads for car travel As Well As the availability of Petroleum were unknowns. Only one thing was certain she would find no motor assistance on the Way. The trip went smoothly from Mannheim to Wieloch where there was an interruption in travel to Purchase Petroleum from the City pharmacy. As the car drove through the villages spewing Clouds of dust and exhaust men stood speechless in wonder at the Devil s Carriage women crossed themselves and ran shrieking into their houses Farmers and children working in the Fields fled in panic and horses bolted in the Street. In Honor of Berta s historic first Long distance drive the Mercedes Benz veterans club of Germany the All Gemeiner Schnaufer club the Baden Wurtemburg Pfalz Saar and the cities of Mannheim and Pforzheim Are sponsoring an antique car Road rally covering the original route. The rally will take place on saturday aug. 6, and will feature cars from Model years 1888 to 1960. The German rail system is offering a special train trip in Honor of the rally starting at the Ludwigshafen Rhein station and following the rally route. There will be several stops along the Way including one in Bruchal for musical entertainment at the station and picture taking As the antique cars drive through the City. From the station passengers will be taken to the Castle for a Short reception to await the arrival of the cars.
