Porter said the action mandated by a 1984 Law is expected to Cost up to $950 million a year for the various industries affected by the final land disposal regulations. The requirement to neutralize Hazar Dous waste before putting it in landfills will affect an estimated 861 million Gal Lons of waste each year according to an Epa statement. It said the new rules Are effective immediately and will cover some 129 million Gallons of waste from electroplating and about 83 million Gallons of Furnace dust produced by Mills that Recycle scrap metals. The Petroleum Industry which produces about 172 million Gallons of refinery waste annually was Given two years to comply with the regulations. Steve Weil chief of the Epa s land disposal restrictions Branch said the extra time is necessary to allow the Industry to develop facilities to incinerate the waste or extract harmful materials.
