These Pearly Whites Are mine All mine. Any More ideas los Angeles times syndicated columnist Landers welcomes your letters. You can write to her in care of the stars and stripes Apo 09211, . Letters motorcyclists advocate use of helmets this letter is in response to the person who recently wrote in opposition to mandatory helmet statutes for motorcyclists. In his letter he states his belief that greater emphasis should be placed on the cause of motorcycle accidents and the need for better rider education. These Points Are Well taken and indeed Are True. He also however denies the value of helmets i reducing a rider s or passenger s risk of sustaining head injuries. There has never been any substantiated Evi Dence that helmets save lives or would protect your head from serious injury says the writer. While the Point can be made that Many mot9rcy-clists die or suffer serious head injuries even with a helmet one should not be misled to believe that a helmet does not significantly diminish a rider s or Pas Senger s risk of head injury in the Case of an Accident. I am a motorcyclist and will never ride without helmet. I too have had an Accident on my motorcycle. Were it not for the helmet i was wearing at the time quite possibly judging from the gouges in my helmet might have fractured my Skull or worse. At the very least i would have lost a Good piece of my Scalp to the Street and suffered a concussion. Instead thanks to that helmet i walked away with no More than a few scratches on my backside. If that in t enough then consider this according to statistics compiled by the National Highway traffic safety administration a rider in an Accident travelling 35 Mph is three times More Likely to sustain a sever head injury without a helmet than a rider with a Hel met. That number jumps to seven at speeds Over 35. In any Case an a helmeted rider is More than twice As Likely to die in a crash than his helmeted counterpart. As manufacturers Advance the state of the Art in helmet technology those numbers will Only Point More strongly in favor of their use. I do not however advocate mandatory helmet legis lation either. I feel that it should instead be the insurance companies which put the pressure to Wear Hel mets on Enders by refusing to pay out death benefits to the survivors of those who won t. In my opinion any motorcyclist especially an experienced one who would in the face of such Over whelming evidence continue to deny the Validity of helmet use must not have much inside his head that is Worth protecting. I la keep my helmet thanks. Richard Zimmermann bit Borg West Germany for anyone who is sceptical about motorcycle Hel mets while Riding please try the following equipment 1. Put on a motorcycle helmet. Now have someone strike you in the head with a baseball Bat 2. If you Are still sceptical take the helmet off Anklet them strike you in the head again. You la probably have to Check into a Hospital so have the phone num ber ready. The evidence is strongly in favor of helmets where motorcycle accidents occur. Along with rider Educa Tion and proper Riding attire these three items can greatly increase rider safety and enjoyment. The recent writer pointed out that rider education greatly increases a person s safety while Riding commend him on this. People need to make in formed decisions the first of which is whether to ride or not. Once a person decides to ride then it s a question of doing it properly. Staff sgt. Thomas Keplar Prum air station West Germany american shoppers Embarrass Reader i am writing in regards to the recent article about travel to Prague. I enjoyed the article and i found it helpful. However one Point disturbed me. When the author spoke of shopping i Felt embarrassed for the americans she de scribed who would buy All of the remaining comforter because they were so admittedly the Story took place in East Germany but this scene is played Over and Over by visitors from the West to the East. The author herself stated at on Point that she hoped that the last comforter was Pur chased by a czech. My Point is that for the people there the comforters Are not so cheap and they Are not being bought As Bishop s giving extolled i cheer for Bishop Ferrario and his decision to make the land work for the people instead of holding on to property for sentimental reasons. It s a shame More religious leaders can t be that compassionate and for Ward thinking. If the Vatican would Only be so courageous instead they continue to collect gifts from Heads of state on official visits to be put in museums to collect dust while people Are illiterate and thus unable to support themselves. The plight of the poor continues on Andon. I know of the Bishop s desire to help the less Fortu Nate in his ongoing actions to help provide Homes and food for them. This is in line with his love of god s people and if i could vote for him i would great going Bishop Joe please keep up the Good work the people need you Carolyn Polojack Comiso air station Sicily gifts but As necessities. Often one hears much about How travel to the East is so cheap and Little about the historic cultural values there. I mean if you want to save Money it is a lot cheaper to not go at All. I guess it is what you look Foror value about travel. I am writing because the idea of americans who have so much to be running around to save a few dollars leaves a bad impression on me. I wonder if it dissimilar for others perhaps it does t make any differ ence. Gerald a.
