Sperry chairman Probst Dies at 65 Salt Lake City a Ger Ald g. Probst a decorated world War ii Pilot who later Rose through the corporate ranks to become chairman of Sperry corp., died in his sleep at his Home. He was 65. Probst died sunday the company and family said in a statement. The cause of death had not been determined As of tuesday said car Olyn Rowes of Uniss. Probst was named chairman and chief executive officer of Sperry in september 1986, when the $5 Bil lion computer and defense systems company merged with Burroughs corp. To form Uniss corp. He retired a few months later but continued to serve As a member of Uniss International s advisory Board. Probst was born in Ogden Utah sept. 11, 1923. He joined the air Force in 1942 out of High school and was commissioned a Pilot offi cer. He commanded a b-24 bomber in world War ii missions Over Europe for which he was awarded the distinguished flying Cross and the air medal with three Oak Leaf clusters. Following War service Probst at tended the University of Utah and earned a Bachelor s degree in electrical engineering. He then returned to serve m the air Force s research and development come. During military service he at tended the Massachusetts Institute of technology and received a Mas Ter s in electrical engineering. Probst joined Sperry uni vac in St. Paul minn., in 1961, and be came a divisional president in 1971. Probst became corporate vice president in 1974, executive vice president in 1975 and company president in 1980. He was elected chairman of the Board of Sperry june 1, 1982. Probst is survived by his wife Betty four children and 16 grand children. Services will be held Friday at the mount Olympus mormon Chapel.
