On the final night of the rally a 450-mile icy Road grind High up in the maritime Alps behind Monte Carlo Buffum and Behr had moved up to an amazing ninth place. And it was then that Buffum decided to slow Down. After All of his problems he was t about to crash at that late stage. Speeding Down to the Monte Carlo Harbor from the mountains we arrived just in time to see the americans Cross the finish line scoring their 12th place before thousands of cheering fans. After the rally Buffum who had gone throughout the final stages for 27 hours without sleep said we started the rally without any pretensions and we never expected to do this Well. They were competing with their own car and practically had no professional help from anyone until near the end. And they managed to beat a lot of professional rally Drivers in the mountains. But far from it. Buffum faced two weeks of Field exercises As soon As he parked the car. This year s Monte Carlo rally gets under Way on saturday morning from five europeans cities Lausanne Switzerland a Estrere Italy Barcelona Spain Monte Carlo itself and bad Homburg West Germany. Twenty four teams will leave from bad Homburg just North of Frankfurt on saturday morning with the 1969 Winner Bjorn Wal Degaard of Sweden one of the top entrants in a factory entered Toyota celica four wheel drive car. The first car is due to leave the starting ramp at 9 20 . The Spectator starting area will be set up near the Casino follow signs to the Spiel Bank rally fans in West Germany also May see the cars and visit with Drivers during the technical inspections on Friday afternoon beginning at 2 . And ending at about 6 . The inspections will be held at the bad Homburg Kuxhaus. The starting program in bad Homburg is being sponsored by the automobile club of Germany avd.
