European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - January 19, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday january 19, 1989 the stars and stripes Page 21 prep Pickin s no Holiday play but of for Cholet once again Dodds Germany been invited to participate in the International cadets basketball tournament at Cholet France. Dodds Germany will join six teams fro France two from Italy and one each from Yugo Slavia Greece and Spain in the March 25-27 tournament. Dodds Germany director Joe Blackstead again appointed athletic coordinator Tom Leblanc to be the official representative and head coach. Asin the past Leblanc will pick two Dodds Ger Many coaches to be assistants. Application forms have been sent to the school sin Germany for nomination of players by their respective principals and coaches. Only varsity players who were born in 1972, 1973 and 1974, Are eligible to compete. Tryouts for the 10-player . Team have Bee scheduled for March 3-5 at Heidelberg High school and the team will be transported to an from Cholet from Wei Brincken High school. However the players must get to Heidelberg forthe tryouts and Home and those making the team must get to Wei Brincken and Back Home at their own expense. Coaches and players also must secure a visa forestry to France. Information on the procedure been included in the application forms packet sent to All the schools involved. I think it is great that Dodds Germany sanctions the Cholet Competition and the athletes get a Chance to test their skills against the outstanding Young basketball players of other nations. However by sanctioning such an event Dodds Germany appears to violate its own policy concerning outside tournament Competition. Under current regulations Dodds teams Are permitted to participate in invitational tournaments providing there is no loss of school time Nocost to the government no school equipment or uniforms Are used transportation is not provide from the school s transportation fund and coaches do not coach in any Competition not listed in the interscholastic athletic schedule. Every stipulation above except the one pertain ing to loss of school time appears to have been waived in order to Send the team to France. I feel that More Good can be done for More High school basketball people if directors of All Dodds regional not just Dodds Germany would a least give their Blessing if not Sanction to participation in Christmas Holiday tournaments. Just relaxing the regulations concerning the us of equipment and uniforms and permitting the coaches to handle their teams in such tournament would be a big step in the right direction. If the Cholet tournament could be considered inthe realm of nation activities it would be a different matter. But since France booted out the american Mili tary quite some time ago that reason does t hold water. The Cholet tournament is for boys Only but Leblanc wrote that he written clubs that have invited Dodds teams to compete in their tournaments for information concerning girls tournaments in which Dodds Germany teams might compete. As of last week he had received no Posi Tive response. Plans have been finalized for the big schools and Small schools basketball tournaments. The big schools arrangements were rather Sim ple. All 13 schools will compete at Mannheim in a single elimination tournament. The Only major differences Are the single elimination format As opposed to the Consolation Type meets of the past an the fact that an extra Day will be needed. Five games both boys and girls will be played wednesday feb. 22 using both the Benjamin Franklin Village sports Arena and Sullivan bar Racks gymnasium. Eight games Are scheduled for thursday semifinals take place Friday and third place and championship games wind up the tournament on sat urday. But the Small schools arrangement required Little More detailed work. First the tournament had to be moved from Baum older when a Mili tary commitment arose and All billeting facilities were required for that project. The new site was not determined until last wee when shape volunteered to play the role. In that regard girls basketball coach Norma Bossert needs some assistance. He wants All Small schools coaches to Send him rosters with names numbers height hometowns and pictures of logos from each school. The phone number is 32-6544 3558/5277. Address is shape h.s., Apo ny09088. There is one other aspect concerning the difficulties of staging the tournament the Southern regional will be held at two Sites. Because of the impossibility of getting enough housing for 10 girls and 10 boys teams the girls will compete at Munich and the boys will play at Karlsruhe. Hahn is staging the Northern regional. The to four teams will Advance to the finals at shape. Wiesbaden s Rob Harris really Tore up the nets last week. He connected on 20 of 26 Field Goa attempts against Hanau winding up with 47 Points. He also had 23 rebounds against the pan thers and followed that performance with a 26 Point 16-Board game against Frankfurt to easily win boys player of the week accolades. Vilseck s Maria Armstrong impressed Baum Holder coach Jack Dougan last week. I Don t know what your ground rules Are for picking the player of the week but i want to Tell you about Vilseck s Maria Armstrong and what Shedid to us last week Dougan said monday. Friday night she scored 21 of Vilseck s 34points, handled the Ball superbly and played Excel Lent defense. We won but she really had a a super night. On saturday Dougan continued we thought we had her number. She got Only one Point in the first half. However she killed us in the second got More Points than my whole team scored 19-17 and we were two teaming and three team ing her. She came up with several key steals spar kled on defense did it weekend performances Are the keys to player of the week selections and i also listen to coaches especially opposing coaches who take the trouble to Call us about outstanding players. Thanks Jack your recommendations helped Maria win this week s recognition. Dodds basketball players definitely will com Pete in the Albert Schweitzer tournament. Tryouts will be held March 18 at Benjamin Franklin sports Arena. All players born Jan. 1,1971 or later Are Eli Gible. They must report no later than 1 . And each player must bring passport for proof Osage. Leblanc said application forms will be mailed to the schools.
