In the current Issue of the journal of the american medical association Doc tors unveiled the most damning Evi Dence yet linking tobacco to ischaemic heart disease a weakening of the heart caused by episodes of reduced blood flow. The team monitored the patients hearts continuously for 24 hours or longer using a portable Bolike device called the hotter Monitor worn by patients As they pursued their usual activities. During 4,968 hours of monitoring the researchers detected 975 episodes of restricted blood flow to the heart. Only 8 percent of these events were actually Felt by the patients who were asked to keep a log of their activities and Chest pains. On average the researchers reported smokers had three ischaemic episodes per Day while non smokers had just one event. Each event lasted about 24 min utes for smokers but just two minutes for the non smokers. Smokers exhibited ischaemic activity that lasted 12 times longer than non smokers the researchers concluded. The direct recording of ischaemic activity during the everyday life of the smoker has been a True smoking gun Cohn said. The researchers said they still do not know exactly How cigarettes trigger the ischaemic attacks. Cohn suggested two possibilities that nicotine causes the blood vessels to constrict or that Carbon monoxide also present in smoke dam Ages the lining of the vessels.
