European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - January 26, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday january 26, 1989 the stars and stripes Page 21 prep Pickin s who s on first or who s on the mat what is happening on the wrestling front judging from the weekly reports there have Beena lot of exciting matches this season and Many out standing wrestlers Are beginning to Peak As the sea son moves along toward tournament Competition the four Germany Bennor regional Are two week from saturday and the Central european championships Are feb. 17-18. Other in country tournaments Are scheduled Between that weekend and March 11. But there seems to be a Little bit of the old Bud Abbott Lou costello who s on first routine going on on the Mats too. Coaches from two different areas called me Sun Day and monday complaining that people who had t wrestled were Given credit for victories or were charged with defeats and people who actually had competed and won were not mentioned in the reports filed by the Host coaches. What gives the immediate reaction is to blame the official scorer. However that the vast majority of times is placing the blame on the wrong person. The official scorer could not have the wrong peo ple wrestling. He she is handed a card listing the opponents and the scorer s sole duty in any partic ular match is to record each wrestler s achievements As the official awards the Points earned or the final time of a pin. A scorer being human might acc Dently record the Points on the wrong Side of the Ledger once in a while or an official might accidentally raise the wrong in recording Points in the heat of an exciting match but most of the time those mistakes Are caught and rectified. I talked with Veteran wrestling official and former coach Mannie Davatelis about this and he said that coaches often have two or More boys weigh in at Given weight and then decide at the very last minute who will compete in that bracket selecting the Grap Pler with the Best Chance of winning the match and picking up some team Points and moving the other boy up to the next weight. Strategy of course plays a big role in Good coach ing but it certainly behoves a coach to inform the official scorer exactly who is out there on the virtually every meet a triangular or quadrangular it hardly is fair for a visiting coach to expect the scorer to personally know every competitor from every school. Accurate match sheets Are necessary because tournament directors use the weekly Competition results to determine the official seedlings for the championships. Those seedlings in turn determine the offi Cial pairings. A boy charged with a loss he did incur could be mismatched when the official pairings Are made conversely a boy credited with a win Heddin t record might be Given a better pairing than he deserves perhaps even a Bye into the next round. Once again Ramstein track and Field coach Bruce Steffensmeier is trying to update a Dod Shonor Roll. He began the project a couple of years ago but he really got into the meat of the program extensively late last year. Over the Christmas holidays Steffensmeier spent several Days checking out the stars and stripes sports files and he has compiled the most Complete Honor Roll i have Ever seen on the Dodds track and Field program. It includes the Best times distance Sand Heights recorded in any reported meet since i started running the is Honor Roll in 1 969. Unlike the stars and stripes Honor Roll which because of space limitations lists Only the top three athletes and ties Steffensmeier s log includes the top10 and ties for every event boys and girls. And As Bruce says in a letter he has sent to Ever school in Dodds in Europe the stars and stripes carries Only winning results in the Honor Roll. Many times the people finishing second in any one event Inone meet have better statistics than winners in other meets. And an outstanding athlete s non Best achieve ments Many times Are better than other competitors Best efforts but Only the elite one is printed. It would be really great if All the coaches would respond to Bruce s request for Aid. Once a completed Honor Roll has been established it becomes relatively easy to update. 9 9 9former is All Europe eager Mike Hanson is cutting a wide Swath on the collegiate front.
