   European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - January 26, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse                                Is Lynda w. Sparks Terese Sarno with one of her Bojart photographs. Focus by ram Runquist staff writer few people would feel compelled to spend their free time working for a company even if it is one of Europe s most renowned Ballet companies. But Terese Sarno an Art teacher at the american elementary and Middle school in Lan Stuhl West Germany has been inspired to do just that. For More than 15 years she has devoted her vacations and extra funds to travelling All Over the world to photograph the rehearsals and performances of the Maurice Bojart Ballet Lausanne. A collection of those photographs is on display through tuesday in the foyer at the theater in Pfalz Bau in nearby Ludwigshafen. The exhibit opened in conjunction with a series of performances there by the Swiss Ballet company. On opening night for both Sarno s exhibit and the Ballet the dancers finished rehearsal and left to dress for the performance which was to include four works choreographed by Maurice Bojart among them two of his newer works Elnour and be Dabouk. Sarno stayed to talk about her work and the company. Sarno obviously excited about another Chance to see a Bojart Ballet said late rehearsals Are not unusual. Bojart s dancers always work hard often practising for 10 hours a Day she said. He expects a lot from them but they rarely complain. The experience of working with Bojart is Worth the Effort. And the audience can definitely see the difference. A Bojart Ballet is like none  Sarno Speaks from experience. In the exhibit a photo of a rehearsal of Faust at the Herod Atticus theater in Greece hangs next to a shot of a rehearsal in Lausanne. Nearby is a shot from a performance of Noiseau de Feu firebird one of Bojart s most famous works in Chicago. And across the room hangs a picture from a rehearsal at the Nasche Rostam open air theater in Iran. Asked How she came to be travelling the world to photograph the creations of Bojart and his company Sarno recalled the first time she saw a Bojart Ballet almost 20 years ago. It was the summer of 1969, and the company then the Ballet of the 20th Century of Brussels was performing at the Avignon summer festival in France. Bojart she said had already established his a Terese Sarno photograph of a 1977 performance of firebird in Chicago. His company founded in 1960, was gaining worldwide recognition thro ugh travels to places As far away As Israel. Sarno who was spending the summer studying Art at the louvre had been interested in Ballet since taking lessons As a child in Boston. She went to a performance of Bojart s company at the Palace of the Pope theater in Avignon. The experience she said was  Sarno was so impressed that while working during the next few years As an Art teacher in Boston s Public schools she began arranging her vacations to coincide with the company s travels. By 1973, she had decided to Combine her photographic skills with her love of the Bojart Ballet. Her first Bojart photographs taken that year were of the performance of per la Dolce Memoria i Quel Giorno for the Sweet memory of that Day at the Baboli gardens in Florence. They were followed by hundreds More As Sarno travelled with the company in the next 15 years to Greece France England Belgium Iran Canada Spain and the United states. Bojart s company is very productive. They perform an average of 200 times a year and travel up to six months during that time. But they Are never repetitious Sarno said. Bojart is always bringing in new dancers and experimenting with new forms of music and patterns of dance. Every time is  she said she has especially enjoyed sitting in on rehearsals because it has Given her an Opportunity to View the creative process in action. Asked if there was one trip she enjoyed the most Sarno immediately glanced to a shot from the rehearsals at the Herod Atticus theater in Greece in 1976. With a View of the acropolis in the background she remembers that the atmosphere was spectacular the dancers  and a favorite Ballet i prefer Bojart s older works such As Noiseau de Feu and Sacre do Pri Temps but i find his newer works such Asel Nour and alleluia interesting. They Are More abstract and give evidence to a new Type of Bojart Ballet which is More linear even  Sarno said she has worked with other choreographers most recently with Lorca Massini during his production of Zorba in Verona Italy. But she quickly added Bojart will always be my favorite. His ballets Are  Sarno plans to continue teaching at Lan Stuhl for the next few years would like to Start a local photography class and Hopes to continue contributing her photographs and dance reviews to such magazines As the american dance Magazine and the French Saison de la Danse. And of course Shell be travelling to Paris in the Spring for a performance by the company during celebrations commemorating the 200th anniversary of the French revolution. Sarno s photographs in the show Are accompanied by several choreographic drawings by Angele Albrecht one of Bojart s ballerinas. The exhibit can be seen during afternoon Box office hours monday through Friday from 5 to 7 . And weekends from 6 to 7 .
