The Kings who lost their fifth straight led 53-46 after Lasalle Thomp son hit a Layup with 8 50 to play in the third Quarter. His time of 7 minutes 47.07 seconds clipped More than four seconds off the meet record of 7 51.72, set last year by Jose Luis Gonzalez of Spain. Wouita Holder of four world outdoor records and the 1984 olympic 5,000-meter Champion showed sur prising Comfort on the Tricky High banked boards of Madison Square Garden. He had raced Only once in doors in a 3,000 at Valencia Spain in 1987. In the millrose 3,000, he stayed close to the Early Pace before slipping into the Lead with about 2 a laps remaining. After five time millrose Winner Doug Padilla overtook him with about 1 /4 laps left Wouita had enough left to take the Lead again on the last turn. O Sullivan winning for the third time in four years blazed the last Quarter in 56.0 and won in 3 54.27, the fastest in the world this year. It also was the third fastest in millrose history behind fellow irishman Eamonn Coghlan s 3 53.0 in 1981 and 3 53.82 in 1985. O Sullivan Coghlan and Maree who was second in3 58.37, All attended Villanova. Earlier Joyner Kersee twice equalled the world in door Best in the women s 55-meter High hurdles. Joyner Kersee the 1988 olympic Champion in the heptathlon and the Long jump was timed in 7.37 seconds in winning her semifinal heat then came backhand matched that in the final. Carla Garrett of Arizona established the meet record in the women s shot shot put with a heave of 52-1 %. It was the first time the event was held in the meet s 82-year history
