In five previous years of working with military police dogs Fin Ley handled a Labrador retriever and two German shepherds. All i d Ever had were larger attack trained dogs Finley said. But after working with Moose for a year Finley said i would t Trade him for the a nine year army Veteran himself Moose has been trained to sniff out multiple drug doors Finley said in a recent interview in the office he and Moose share. The canine in question was curled up on a Rug sleeping off an Early morning health and welfare in Moose is called a contraband dog be cause of his Small Breed Finley said. But while there s no difference be tween the narcotics detecting abilities of the Large dogs and Small ones like Moose he is not trained to attack track or any of the scouting that a larger Breed dog would be trained to for that reason Small Breeds like Moose Are being phased out of the army s working dog program said sgt. 1st class John Mcdougall who runs the canine corps for the army in Europe. Smaller Breeds were found to be less Cost effective Mcdougall said because they had Only one Mission while larger dogs can perform several jobs. The smaller dogs also have no role in War time.
