Steam release of Tim radioactive water planned Washington a the operator of the three mile Island nuclear Plant has been Given clearance to boil away 2.3 Mil lion Gallons of radioactive water that is part of the legacy of the nation s worst Commer Cial nuclear Accident. About 260,000 Gallons of the water have been sitting in the reactor building basement since the Accident at the Penn Sylvania Plant in 1979. The rest of the water was used in cleanup operations since the Accident. General Public utilities nuclear the Plant operator proposed to get rid of All the water by boiling it into steam that will be released from a 100-foot-High stack. The Utility suggested packaging impurities for shipment to a Low level radioactive waste dump. But two Pennsylvania citizens groups challenged the decision expressing con Cern about the release of radiation into the atmosphere. The groups asked the Community s atomic safety and Licens ing Board which is part of the Federal nuclear regulatory commission to consider other options including storing the water in tanks for perhaps 30 years to allow the radiation to decay. But after holding hearings in Lancas Ter pa., the Board said in a written Deci Sion that the storage plan is not obviously Superior to the evaporation  we Are convinced that implementation of Gnu nuclear s proposal will have extremely Small radiation exposure consequences both to workers and the general Public the Board said. Last Spring Gnu nuclear raised Eye brows among local citizens by spending initial $800,000 on the evaporation sys tem even before the Board had held hear Ings to decide whether the system could be used. Kay Pickering spokeswoman for three mile Island Alert an anti nuclear group said at the time that it was Dis Tressing that the Plant operator had apparently acted prematurely. But Gnu nuclear said that it was merely trying to plan and that it would abide by whatever the Board decided. The $7 million evaporation process is part of the $ 1 billion cleanup of three mile Island unit 2. During the Accident uranium fuel was allowed to lose the vital Cooling water that the normally Cov ers it causing material in the Core to melt
