Derwinski to be the nation s first Secretary of veterans affairs and scheduled a closed session for feb. 28 to study National Security information involving Derwinski. An open hearing was set for March 1 As the committee pressed for new information on Derwinski s act in tipping off the South korean embassy that a korean Central intelligence Agency official was defecting to House investigators who were looking into alleged influence peddling by the koreans. The committee is now scheduled Tovote on the nomination March 2. A source familiar with the inquiry said the National Security information was contained in Fri interviews of Derwinski in which he allegedly gave conflicting accounts and explanations of his action. The information involves electronic monitoring of embassies that picked up evidence of Derwinski s actions Accord ing to a source familiar with the matter. Reports of Fri interviews of subjects in background As Well As criminal investigations so called 302s Are usually not made available to Senate commit tees. One source said that the alleged conflicts Are apparent in summaries of the interviews that have been supplied to members of the panel. Government claims airline Security breached Boston a the government is seeking $25,000 in fines from american airlines for alleged violations of Federal regulations claiming Federal agents carried explosives and a gun through the Carrier s Security checkpoints at Logan International Airport. The government claims in a suit filed thursday that in june 1987, Federal aviation administration agents were passed through an american checkpoint at Logan with a Dummy pipe bomb hand grenade and gun packed in their carry on Luggage.
