Sixteen different schools have competed at the same site at the same time before under a Dodds tournament format but they were competing on two separate division Levels for championships not everyone scrambling for the one available class title. The Field is so big that an extra Day had to beaded to acco update All the Germany aaa and a teams for the single elimination tournament. Com petition got underway wednesday with five boys and five girls games. Champions will be determined late saturday afternoon at the Benjamin Franklin Village sports Arena. Mannheim which won the a championship while posting a 12-0 All games record has been top seeded in the boys Section. Germany aaa Champi on Heidelberg and a Champion Mannheim both owning perfect slates have been seeded one two inthe girls Section. Stuttgart and Wiesbaden Are the respective defending champions. The Germany Bennor Small schools championships also take place this weekend. The Field is comprised of the top four boys and girls teams fro last week s two regional. The Home standing shape spartans who finished second the last two years have been rated no. 1 in the boys division with Munich no. 2. Munich Drew the top rating Over Brussels in the girls Competition. New Small schools champions Are assured be cause both Giessen and Fulda which posted perfect records last year failed to survive last week s respective boys and girls regional Competition last week end. The Small schools tournament was scheduled As single elimination tournament too. But tournament director Norman Bossett said head been Given official approval to play extra Consolation games As Long As there was no Cost to he said that the shape people had raised enough outside Money to cover the Cost of the officials and other expenses to allow the staging of the Consolation program for thursday s losers Friday morning so those teams would t have to make the trip All the Way up Here for Only one what a travesty if Dodds is going to run a tournament it should run the tournament it prescribes not an Alley top do what you want sideshow that some individuals might desire. This year in order to allow All the teams to have the Opportunity of playing at least on postseason game the Germany Bennor officials opted for the single elimination format. If the shape people Are going to be allowed to play extra games the first round losers at Mannheim should be accorded the same privilege. There really in t any reason to set up a tournament format if it is not going to be used. Prognostication was t too bad on the Small schools basketball and Central european wrestling fronts. I picked the boys and girls champions in both the Northern and Southern regional. Inthe North i had shape beating osterholz for the title and Hahn beating Brussels for third place in the boys action. Brussels spoiled the bid for perfection with a one Point Victory Over osterholz in the semifinals. I was perfect in the girls picks Brussels Over Giessen for the title accent Over Hahn for third. In the South i had both championship games a they turned out Munich s boys Over Berlin Munich s girls Over Baum older. I picked Augsburg Totake third place in both divisions the boys did edging Ansbach by a Point but the girls lost to Vilseck. On the mat which was much harder selecting be cause it involved individuals i d give myself a very Good Grade. I scored three Perfecto Wiir Burg s . Werner Over Wiesbaden s Jeff Bradburn at 119, Brussels Kevin Adams Over Wei Brincken s James Jeunelot at135 and Heidelberg s Billy Mittenzwey Over Patch s Derek Padden at 140. At 112 and 152, where Heidel Berg s David Halpin beat Stuttgart s Ryan Russell and Pitburg s tyke mix topped Niernberg s Gary Godbee respectively i had the right finalists wrong winners. I also had Heidelberg s Jason Savage 125ber Lin s Tony Alston 171 and Vilseck s Shawn hop Kins 189 winning titles but i missed tabbing their opponents. Only at 103 did i fail to get at least one finalist. This week i look for Wiesbaden to nudge Ramstein and Mannheim to beat Wei Brincken in the big schools semifinals and the warriors to nip the Bison for the boys title following Ramstein s third place Victory. In girls play Heidelberg topples Patch and Wiesbaden nips Mannheim in the semis with Heidelberg finishing the Campaign undefeated and Mannheim taking third. Wrestling at London High school has been strictly a team venture this year. The coaches Are Jonathon Gollogly and Larry ill. They also wrestle on the team Gollogly at 140, Dill at 119. Player coaches Are common in the lower professional leagues but they Are extremely rare on the High school front. When the word got out last fall that London might have to drop wrestling because no one was interested in the coaching position the members of the team agreed among themselves that there would be team and they would help each other. Interest in the team flared and a record turnout was achieved. Because Gollogly had had considerable High school wrestling experience and British freestyle tournament Competition he was chosen Leader of the pack and Dill agreed to assist him. They have been working very hard with other returning members to teach the newcomers the basics arid to improve the other members skills. Under Dodds regulations if a school does thave a coach it must have a faculty sponsor and someone else can handle the coaching. The boys went to the top for their sponsorship principal Ken Jones and vice principal Karla Stark were so impressed with the boys attitude and desire that they agreed to sponsor the team. Marine Rich Lepley stationed in London has de voted some time to helping the team. However his work schedule has had him on the Road much of the time and has t been Able to be available As much As he liked. And Jim Watson team manager of . Olympic wrestling squad has stopped by a couple of times to offer some advice. So the two members of the wrestling squad have inherited most of the coaching responsibility. Devot ing so much time helping the rest of the team develop their skills have Cut somewhat into their own individual practice programs but they feel the team comes first and have been willing to make the Nec Essary sacrifice to help improve it. And How has the team fared not too badly at posted a 5-4-1 season record and has Hopes of scoring a few wins in this week s . at Lakenheath where the Host lancers and Croughton rate As the top teams. The London team certainly has displayed a great Deal of teamwork and its can do philosophy has been electrifying for the rest of the student body. It is really Good to see that kind of desire an teamwork. Gollogly and Dill Are to be congratulated for their Fine leadership. The team should be lauded too for sticking in there when it could have been so easy to say of Well what s the use and forgotten about wrestling.
