Sure there Are lots of laughs. But this film is concerned less with yuks than with the dark undercurrents of the hardscrabble world of stand up clubs in which most of the would be comics search desperately and unsuccessfully for the break that can Lead to a guest shot on the Carson show. It s brutal out there. Not Only Are the comics out to Cut each others throats but they have to Deal with Sleazy club owners Drunken hecklers and the nagging feeling that one Day they la Wake up old and Gray with nothing to show for their trouble. Punchline focuses on two denizens of this rather Bleak stage. Tom Hanks one of the top comedic actors working today takes a career risk Here As a vile egotistical character named Steven Gold who is disliked by almost everyone who knows him. The other Lead is Lilah Krystich Sally Fielda housewife so consumed by her passion to succeed As a comic that she raids her family s cookie Jar Money to buy jokes from seedy gag writers in run Down Luncheonette like some kind of Junkie. The two Are thrown together when they turn up at the same club to work. She s awful and since Gold is something of a local name she begins pestering him for advice. He wants nothing to do with her. Finally to get her off his Back he advises her to draw humor from her family life which is certainly funnier than anything she s doing on stage at the moment. When she does that suddenly she begins to Click with her audiences and he begins to slide downhill even As she begins her ascent. Hanks is first rate As always particularly when he has Gold do a manic interpretation of singin in the rain for Lilah and in another gut wrenching scene when he practically self destructs on stage in front of his father and brother. But i have a lot of problems with Field. I be liked some of her work but too often since her Vou like me speech at the oscars a few years Back she has seemed Bent on Ingrati tingly sucking More and More such positive reinforcement from viewers to sustain her performances like some kind of Cinema Vampire. She s definitely miscast in punchline although it s such a Quirky role that i can t think of anyone who could have done it better. Nor can i quite Swallow her character s obsession which threatens to destroy her family. It s not like stand up is the Only thing in her life she has a Nice House Nice kids Nice husband the excellent John Goodman Nice life. There s no logical reason for her to be As unrelentingly desperate As she is. Punchline keeps from sinking completely on the basis of Hanks Fine work but i honestly can t give it More than two stars.
