Italy slow Cost religious pensions now open to americans baking Cruger Mediterranean Bureau the Rome Uso has unlocked the doors to Low Cost accommodations that previously were closed to most members of the american military Community. The accommodations Are in 350 pensions run primarily or religious pilgrims. The pensions founded by italian Bishops and located throughout Italy offer bed and breakfast for As Little As 20,000 to 40,000 lire about $15.60 to $31.25 per night. Known As Case per Ferie the pensions Are run by religious orders and usually Are available Only to people making religious pilgrimages. Rome s tourism office now working closely with the Rome Uso to make the eternal City More affordable to military visitors helped the Uso open up the lodgings to its clientele. Rome alone has More than 70 of the religious pensions. They Are located throughout the City and in such Choice neighbourhoods As the Vatican Trastevere the Spanish Steps and the historic Center. Some Are in outlying Greener environs where car parking is easier. In addition there Are Caie per Ferie in such tourist destinations As Florence Assisi Bologna and the Isle of Capri. Quot these pensions Are especially suited to families but because of their religious nature certain courtesies must be observed. Noise and disturbances Are inappropriate Quot said Gail Caillouet director of the Rome Uso. Quot the pensions Don t have late night doormen so there is usually a curfew of 11 guests should not expect that their quarters will approximate heaven on Earth. This was confirmed to a weekend Pilgrim during a stay at the Institute of the immaculate Conception in the heart of Rome. The Institute run by an order of French nuns is located at 113 via Sistina about two blocks from the top of the Spanish Steps and the top of the Market hotel Hassler. While a multilingual Doorman greets visitors to the Hassler a tiny octogenarian nun who Speaks no English a Only French and italian a responds to the Institute s Bell. While rooms at both the Hassler and the Institute Are scrupulously clean the guest at the former has a private Bath while the Pilgrim s facilities Are Down the Hall. The room in the Institute had a comfortable single bed a sink a chair and table plus a dim Light that did Little to encourage Reading late into the night. It did not have a phone a to or air conditioning. It did have a 10 30 . Curfew and that was a big drawback. Late night dining is the custom in Rome so it was a hassle to make curfew. But the Price was right. While a single room at the Hassler went for 320,000 lire about $250 without breakfast the Institute charged 35,000 lire about $27 for a single with breakfast. Anyone desiring to stay in a Case per Ferie must first Purchase a Tessera or membership card. A card Good for a year s membership and unlimited stays costs $5 and May be purchased at usos in Italy. Each family member must have a card. Membership also includes comprehensive travellers insurance covering medical expenses lost baggage and various expenses related to trip connected mishaps. Caillouet said the Uso will make reservations for stays in Case per Ferie but that guests must pay Lor and pick up membership cards at the Rome u50 prior to their arrival at the pensions.
