European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - April 12, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday april 12, 1990 the stars and stripes a a a Page 21 prep pickings i enjoy being a High school sports editor. Why i weeks like this one when there Are no Dodds events give one time to Muse. There a nothing like the experience of covering a Skinny 125-Pound quarterback playing in his first ame As a third string freshman quarterback when is team is either 20 Points ahead or 20 Points behind. And covering that Skinny kid when he has matured into an All state or where in a concerned All Europe performer. Or watching a talented coach take a Bunch of raw kids and develop them into a cohesive unit. Covering that team As it progresses to a Small schools basketball championship knowing that your work is appreciated by the players and the coach. Or working with a High school sports manager statistician and budding journalist knowing that when you done to cover his school personally that his statistics Are going to be reliable. Because when you do cover his school his data jibe with yours perfectly. And seeing that budding journalist follow his Bent and develop into an outstanding sports writer. High school sports is Amateur athletes playing their hearts out for the team raising the Flag for Hudson High boys showing them How we stand. Cheerleaders supporting their teams in the cold and rain of football games and the noisy confines of the basketball and wrestling Arenas. The drum majorettes or majors strutting out ahead of the bands twirling their Batons High in the air and catching them a most of the time. There is the other Side of the Coin too. As the prep sports editor of the stars and stripes i done to have to worry about a lot of the other things around the sports world. There Arentt any inane skins games and other television gimmicks such As a timeout when a team has momentum or when slam Dunk contests become More important than the game itself. And i done to have to worry about whether civilians should be allowed to play on military teams or Over-30 dodgers waddling about in the Guise of playing basketball. Or bodybuilders or chess players trying to reflect on the Good things Ben Abram Dodds stars Roll again chateau Roux France a the Dodds Ger Many All stars blistered Limoges 140-91 tuesday night in another tuneup Breeze for the americans. The All stars who won by 44 Points the night before stand 5-1 in exhibitions leading to the Cholet International cadets basketball tournament. A there was just one word to describe it awesome. Just unbelievable. And they played a Good team Quot Dodds coach Tom Leblanc said after routing the French second division team. A these kids put on a clinic. The place went crazy. It was a game ill remember the rest of my life. Not just me. All of the All stars led 72-36 at halftime. That gave Leblanc a Chance to empty his Bench nine players scored in double figures. Wurzburg a Doug Darrell led the americans with 22 Points. Next came Baum older Sandy Owens with 19, berlins Renard Owens with 16, Frankfurt a Jermaine Avie with 13, Brussels John Boyd with 13, Ramstein a Deon Moyd with 13, Mannheim a Dominic Vasser with 12, and a James Mcknight and Frankfurt a Mike Kinder with 10 each. Leblanc praised Andy Owens for his Reserve performance. The 6-foot-5 senior Center clicked on 9 of 10 shots from the Field and grabbed nine rebounds. On one play that rocked the packed Arena Owens pulled Down a rebound dribbled Down court and dunked. Vasser a 5-10 guard led Dodds Rebo unders with 10. The All stars were to next play Orleans Here wednesday night in another Warmup. Get the results of their a non sports events on the sports pages. Do have to be concerned about standings football in the fall girls and boys basketball in the Winter and girls and boys soccer in the Spring adding up properly not like some people who Call in their league standings who Haven to Learned that old sports adage a every time a team or individual wins an athletic event another team or individual has to lose there was an exception to that Rule last year. Dodds Germany sports coordinator Tom Leblanc ordered both teams to be charged with a defeat when a Mannheim Numberg soccer game was prematurely ended because of the unruly conduct of players on both squads. I have to be concerned about arranging for coverage of the Dodds sporting events making sure the Home team coaches Are going to Call in the results with All the first names and other necessary material. I also have the responsibility of writing a High school column each week a actually it is More fun than a responsibility. I get to express my opinions on the issues involving the High school sports program. Sometimes people done to agree with me and they voice their opinions either vocally or by pen. But that a part of the Job. And the Job resumes next week when the Dodds athletes come off their easter Holiday Layoff and commence the second 1990 Spring Campaign on the cinders soccer pitches gymnastic apparatus and Tennis courts. Who knows there might be a speedy freshman who wins the 100, 200 and 400 meters goes on to set Dodds records by the time he a a senior and continues on to emulate sex Dodds luminary Alonzo Babers and wins an olympics Gold medal. There might be a Petite gymnast who achieves olympics Fame. And that Sall part of the Job too.
