Lampoons Christmas vacation pg-13 nation r  a kill me again r Connery Hoffman keep a family business afloat by Chuck Vinch staff writer family business a comedy from the usually sure noted director Sidney Lumet is As flaccid As bread Ough and has More Loose threads than a tailor shop it it s saved by the awesome talents of Sean Connery Ard Dustin Hoffman either of whom could probably turn a Reading of the Telephone directory to something approaching Art. This is an oblique gangster movie about a three generation scots Cherokee sicilian jewish family Nasty led by the raffish brawler Jessie Cmullen Connery who accounts for the scots Serokee portion of the Pedigree. Jessie is a Guy with a slice of goodness in him but me is in his blood. It is the latter genetic trait that is son Vito Hoffman the product of a Union e Ween Jessie and his sicilian wife now dead has a red hard to rid himself of. Vik it gave up crime years before to go legit in the meat packing business although he s not so soft that he can t dispense a beating to a crooked employee who makes threatening noises after he s fired. The Pride and Joy of Vito s life is his half jewish son Adam Matthew Broderick Brilliant student at Mit. Vito has slaved to give the boy everything and yet Adam for no apparent reason Calls his father Quot a piece of garbage and makes it Clear he has no use for his father s values. Adam would much prefer to hang out with his colourful Granddad and hear stories about classic heists in the Good old Days. When Adam approaches his Grandfather about a can to miss Job involving a Ripoff of some potentially valuable genetic material at a research facility Jessie is All for it. Now All they have to do is persuade the extremely reluctant Vito to go along. Against his better judgment Vito does As much to protect his son As anything else but the Job goes awry and this family is soon headed for the rocks. Family business adapted by Vincent Patrick from his own novel of the same name has a Load of problems starting with the Lack of motivation behind just about All the characters actions. A vague justification for Adam s rejection of his father could be built on the premise that he thinks his Grandfather has remained much More True to himself than Vito who hates his Drudge Job but endures it for the Sake of his wife and son. Another problem is Broderick who must have known he d be so overshadowed by his two famous co stars that he would be practically invisible. And the ending is As manipulative and a lovingly sentimental As any you re Likely to see this year. And yet there is no overestimating the talents of Hoffman and Connery. So dissimilar physically the pair strike an Odd kind of Harmony together especially in the scenes where Jessie tries to Sweet talk Vito into signing up for Adam s heist. Lumet should thank his Lucky stars that he had those two Bright lights for such a thin vehicle. Together they manage to keep family business buoyant enough to earn it two and a half out of a possible four  stripes Magazine 23
