European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - May 21, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Page1q a a a the stars and stripes monday May 21,1990letters a other Side of the Coin to peace in Europe i was both saddened and Hurt by pictures printed in the stars and stripes showing the a peace marchers in Nurnberg. It is very painful for me As the wife of a Soldier in the . Army to see myself and my fellow americans being the subject of these demonstrations. And so i am hoping to address your German readership that have Access to this newspaper and Tell them a very personal Side to their country a peace. I am sure that i speak for a great number of american people when i say that we Are All very Happy for the reunification of Germany. We also would like to see world peace become reality a for our futures the futures of our children and of course that of our neighbors. That fact has never changed since our allies asked for our help in protecting West Germany All those years ago. But my plea today is that the people of this country Stop a moment and walk a mile in our shoes. I am sure that there arc Many people who would be very willing to leave this country today but there Are also those of us who have grown to love West Germany possibly almost As much As the True germans do. It May seem very easy on the part of the people of West Germany to Send us a Aback Home a but it is not nearly As easy for us. Base closings and deployment of troops from this country Means that Many americans face very unsure futures. My husband is among those people who were planning on making the army a career until recent peace put All of that into jeopardy. It is a shame to think of losing ones Job Over peace but that is essentially what it All comes Down to. If american troops Are asked to leave Germany troops will have to be Cut so drastically because there Are just too great a number of troops stationed Here to be Able to place those people Back into jobs in the states. It is unfortunate that soldiers like my husband a dedicated men and women who could have really had a promising future in the armed forces a face the threat of losing that Security. It is even a bigger shame that so Many great soldiers and future leaders will have been lost to the armed services people who could really make an Impact on this world. My husband like Many is a very dedicated Soldier and no not Only to his country but also to me and our two children. He was providing us with a Safe and secure future just As he was providing you and your children with one by being Here. So i implore you to Stop a moment and think of How Many lives Are being affected by your country a peace. If we Are working toward a peaceful world where we can All live As one does it matter where that living is done if some Day future generations will have to look up the definition of the word a a War in the dictionary will it matter that there were Ever bound Ries or Walls yes it May seem that our Iob As a keepers of the peace is done Here but actually the Job is just beginning. Now we Are All a keepers of the germans americans East or West if the Wall can come Down so can our prejudices. You Are still our hosts Here and we Are very grateful for the Opportunity that you have Given us to be a part of this great country. But please hear this plea from one Small person echoing the voice of Many. Open your hearts As you have opened your Home to us and keep them both opened for future generations of americans to be Able to have the same Chance that those in the past have had a a Chance to experience the riches of this Beautiful country of yours and the history that makes it so special. To Many americans this is Only a dream. I am a proud american and i truly do love my country. But i have also grown to love yours a and i am very proud to see that you have won your struggle for peace. I feel honoured that my husband As Well As a lot of other americans had a hand in making this a reality for the Many people of the divided Germany. So please just think of the past years when the men and women of the american armed forces have been Here for the people of your country and take a turn at being Here for ours. A Renee r. The place was very crowded Waits were Long. We sat about 15 feet from two men who appeared to be waiting for a Comrade with an injured hand. The younger of the two a private first class was making comments to the senior a sergeant first class about cars in some magazines he was Reading. He was not using quiet tones and the language he used was befitting of someone who would be More comfortable in a sewer. Apparently he was also unintelligent As he should have known that what he accused these cars of doing with such regularity with his Mother was physiologically impossible. At the Point i had had about enough and was getting ready to speak to him he was a a saved by the lunch Bell and left with his party. This is not an isolated incident. Many i have spoken to have been assaulted in unexpected places with language that 15 or 20 years ago would be caused ones Mother to make you spit soap bubbles for a week. Unfortunately it seems today so Many have become indifferent to it that few have the wherewithal to object. Call me old fashioned but language like that still sets my Teeth on Edge. Even More unfortunate is that since children hear this language spoken at Home with such ease they begin to repeat it at the tender Ages of 4 or 5. You should hear what goes on at these playgrounds and the parents shake their Heads in wonder. I recently heard one Parent object to their child playing with another because the child said she apparently never heard her own child use a that four letter word a which she herself used so frequently. You can to go anywhere anymore without being mind you i was in a Hospital clinic not a bar. Even More disturbing i find is that the senior no sat there listening to this garbage and said nothing. My husband is also a sergeant first class and has made corrections on soldiers at the Exchange who were doing the same. Maybe some cos forget but that is part of their Job the wearing of a uniform does not give one the right to use any language one desires anywhere. And it has nothing to do with Freedom of speech. It has everything to do with common decency and professionalism especially Here As we Are All ambassadors of the United states. Yes there Are some women who use colourful language As Well and they Are not excused. But there Are just As Many women and men to whom language like that is highly offensive and who have the right not to be assaulted everywhere they go. And if More adults act like adults instead of providing poor examples to the children maybe a new generation will realize that such Gutter talk is not As natural As breathing As so Many do today.
