European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - May 26, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes Page 11 letters a writer says new soviet cover masks old Loo karm Landers dear Ann Landers several years ago i met an intelligent older Well to do widower. He let me know Early in our relationship that he was in love with me. I fell equally hard within a matter of months. A a Ronald asked me to give up my career in the medical Field in return for a Blissful storybook marriage. After considerable thought i decided that he was the Man i wanted to spend the rest of my life with. We were married in May and six months later he adopted my two children. For five years Ronald was wonderful to the children and extremely attentive and generous to me. Suddenly i noticed some changes in his behaviour. There were too Many nights when he make it Home for dinner too Many unexplained absences on saturdays too Many Spur of the moment out of town trips. When i found lipstick on his shirt and smelled perfume on his face i was devastated. Then i became bitter and resentful. I knew that i could no longer stay married to this Man and decided to get even. I hired a private investigator to Tail my husband. It took several weeks and $10,000 to get exactly what i wanted. When i had the evidence i filed for divorce. His assets amounted to a tidy Fortune. I had no idea he was so Rich. I was awarded our Home two cars we had three and child support. I chose a substantial Cash settlement rather than Alimony. In a certain that members of Ronald a family and some of our friends think of me As a greedy vindictive woman which is Why i am writing. Granted i showed him no mercy but any married Man who sneaks around on his wife deserves to have his clock cleaned and i Hope my letter will encourage other victims to get out of such marriages and not be bashful about taking every dime they can get. A a cheated on wife who profited from the mess dear cheated on wife i can add nothing to your letter. You said it All and i thank you. Dear Ann Landers the Mother who wrote to say How much she would enjoy having a private conversation with her son rang a familiar Bell. She said she was fond of her daughter in Law but How wonderful it would be to have just an hour alone with her son. My Mother passed away 15 years ago. Dad renewed an old Friendship and married the woman the following year. He sold our family Home and they moved into a one bedroom apartment because a we done to want any since i now live 1,500 Miles away i never go to see my father and they Seldom come Here. In All the years that dad has been with his second wife i have yet to have a private conversation with him. Whenever i Call him a a Della either answers the Telephone and stays on or she picks up the second phone when she hears dad talking to me. From then on its a three Way conversation with Della doing 70 percent of the talking. I really miss my dad and Hope you will print this letter. Writing it has made me feel better because i have kept this inside me for so Long. A Colorado Springs dear Colorado Springs i Hope you realize that this is not All Della a fault. Obviously your dad decided Long ago to let Della Call the shots and this is exactly what he is doing. My condolences dear. If one were inclined to take Stock in current Public opinion concerning Mikhail Gorbachev and the soviet Union then one would be inclined to opine along these lines a. The soviet government having recently seen the Light of democracy has no More communist predilections than say the City Council of Toledo Ohio. B. Mikhail Gorbachev a truly jeffersonian individual is dedicated to the peace and Prosperity of his citizenry and is on the Short list for a Nobel peace prize. C. The soviet Peoples whose greatest suffering has been the Lack of a decent shopping mall Are now basking in the warm Sun of Freedom. Should any of the above however exaggerated ring faintly True May i suggest that All is not As it appears. For those who would believe that Gorbachev has purged the soviet establishment of its recalcitrant conservatives and installed in their places the devotees of democracy it May be enlightening to note some evidence to the contrary. Though Gorbachev has indeed routed out most of the corrupt and inefficient Brezhnev Era bureaucrats Many of the replacements have been his allies from the state Security apparatus the Kab a kid Gru Etc a better known As the Cheka. As Joseph k. Woodward pointed out in a recent edition of global affairs such replacements have been made at the Heads of the far East theater of War the Navy political directorate eight military districts two groups of military forces and two of the five branches of the military. Given the leanings of those affiliated with the Cheka it would seem that the supposed erosion of totalitarian ideology within the soviet regime has Only proved a restructuring and fortification of the regime itself. This restructuring not Only implies the red army As a device of the state Security apparatus but has along with like appointments to the politburo and Central committee made possible the ascension of the Kab within the soviet establishment. For those who would believe that a new acceptance within the soviet regime of certain open Market economic practices is equal to a wholesale acceptance of capitalism think again. Gorbachev has flatly rejected capitalism As a replacement for collectivism. The invitation of foreign business interests to the soviet Union simply provides for much needed Industrial innovations. Soviet american and soviet euro Pean economic accords cannot be equated with a revision of economic policy within the soviet Union. Indeed Gorbachev a loosening of the economic restrictions placed upon his citizens has been a largely empty gesture in Light of the still state run Economy. The soviets have simply realized that they cannot profit from the advanced technology and increased production capabilities of the Market oriented Western world without appearing to consider their conversion to it. For those who would believe that due to the modest if superficial Success of glasnost the soviet citizens now enjoy a liberation from oppression consider what happened in Tbilisi. Hundreds of georgians were All letters to the editor must contain the full printed name and address of the writer and must be signed. Maimed or murdered by soviet troops during demonstrations last Spring. True every nation has the right to guard against Domestic violence but the operative word Here is an effectual Slaughter by ones own army should be neither advocated nor carried out for any reason. Of course the soviet Union has murdered some 60 million of its people since 1917. Though the rest of the world May View Tbilisi As an aberration during this soviet age of enlightenment the soviet regime surely views it As the successful execution of Long standing Domestic policy. And finally for those who no longer believe in the soviet threat i to you the following in a world where Large scale land warfare is increasingly unfeasible and the preparation for which is increasingly draining to ones Economy we have come to rely upon High intensity Low level military operations As the Likely alternative. A condensed army is More efficient and flexible and frees up manpower dollars for technological read strategic research and development. Overgrown bureaucratic armies can be no More effective than the overgrown bureaucracies which administer to them. If this is the current american sentiment suffice it to say that the soviets were there first. True the Prospect of Europe As a Battlefield has All but vanished. Filtering into the Public consciousness is the image of an economically unified disarmed and neutralized Europe a this idealistic neutralization being historically laughable. But we can always choose to Lessen our obsession with Europe and shift our glances eastward to the Pacific. That is where More than a third of soviet naval strength a having increased in tonnage by 50 percent in the last decade a has recently been concentrated and where intrusions into japanese airspace by soviet bombers arc on a dramatic Rise. In these times of style Over substance we would do Well to remember that an old Book with a new cover is still an old Book. We need Only to open and read it. A Patricia James Weik Auerbach West Germany views of single Soldier Here we go again Finger pointing i just finished Reading an article on Force reduction. We single soldiers think about Job Security As much As married soldiers do. Granted we done to get the Quot Perks married soldiers do. Formation and say a my car wont or a i have to take my wife somewhere a or a i have to take my kids to school a Etc. I can to come up with those a a highly inventive appointments the married soldiers come up with. Instead i have to do their work to cover them. Single soldiers done to have it so easy. The commander does no to come to your House throw you outside and then bring a drug sniffing dog through your House. The first sergeant does no to come to your door with a a they you detail.
