European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - June 10, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes Page 11 % to letters far Ann Landers. Ive been haunted by your correspondent Fetter to wife on their 32nd wedding anniversary. Two Days later at the age of 54, she died of a heart attack. The Man had written wife to complain about her unresponsiveness to sexual needs. He compared their her wonderful chocolate cake. If. You done to put on frosting a a it a still a Good chocolate cake but it in t nearly As Good As it could be. I would love to hear her Side of the Story. Ill bet its a lot like mine. To All outward appearances my husband and i have an Ideal marriage but when the lights out we May As Well be on different planets. He is Remote and unreachable. As for dangers of sniffing inhalants discussed for my needs detached Remote and unreachable he care less. Instead of drying up emotionally t three years of sexual starvation to Avail myself of the nourishment i needed and i did just that. Do i feel like a Cheater no i do not. It was Only after he cheated me out of what was rightfully mine that i decided to take this Road and i must say it been extremely Rew a regrets in Merced Calif. Dear Merced the response to that column been stagger no. About 80 percent of the letters came from women. Take a look at what in be been getting from fort Lauderdale this is for the Man whose marriage lacked did you make an Effort to add a Little flavor to the relationship mister were you affectionate and considerate on the evenings when sex was not on your mind my husband does no to say a a goodbye when he leaves or a a hello when he comes Home. He says in a a cold fish and he a right. Until he gives me a Good reason to warm up in a going to stay the Way i am. From Minneapolis everyone knows that sexual arousal begins in the head. Our culture always blames the woman when relationships go sour. Somehow it never dawns on people that women who get Frozen out simply crawl away and give up. I sense that the wife of the Man who wrote that stinging letter May have died because her life was so empty she did no to want to live anymore. From Miami. I can to Stop thinking about the woman who died of a heart attack with her husbands letter in the pocket of her Bathrobe. I too was married to a Man who pushed me away a knee in the Back an Elbow in the ribs after we had been married less than six months. When we were with family or friends he put on a wonderful show. My How he loved to Parade masculinity always talking about sex. When people were around he keep hands off me but when we got Home he was ice cold. The marriage lasted 14 months. It was my second third. In a now in therapy to find out Why i pick such losers. From Bangor Maine finally an Opportunity for a National dialogue on a subject that no one wants to talk about though it affects millions of women the females loss of sexual desire at about age 50. The cause is hormone depletion. Ignorance on this subject is appalling. If men suffered from the problem you can be sure billions of dollars would be spent on research. I beg the women who have this deficiency to see a gynaecologist. Tomorrow dear readers in a printing several letters from male readers who have totally diff fifteen years ago or. Robert Dupont then director of the National Institute on drug abuse stated that a american teen agers Are making themselves into Guinea pigs in what i believe will be a tragic at that time the popular drug he was referring to was marijuana. Today the drug that is being abused and experimented with is inhalants and our american teen agers Are still the Guinea pigs with tragic results. What Are inhalants inhalants Are breathable chemicals that produce mind altering Vapours. They include solvents aerosols some aesthetics and other chemicals. Here in Kaiserslautern butane appears to be our main chemical inhalant abuse. Other products May include plastic Cement air plane be Fingernail polish remover Model Cement Gaso f i i decided after line and paint thinner. This subject. Done to miss it. Ferent views on creators Syndicate most of us done to think of these products As drugs because they were not created to be used in that Way. A who could be so crazy a we think of them As too volatile too lethal to be inhaled into our bodies. However lethal they May be these chemicals can induce a a a High that is simple Quick and cheap. For example you can buy a can of butane at the local shop Pette no questions asked and when you inhale the Vapours the High is almost immediate. What Are the dangers the chemicals found in most inhalants Are rapidly absorbed into the respiratory system and passed through the blood to the brain. Solvent sniffing can cause death by asphyxiation suffocation or heart failure. The Medica Community attributed brain liver kidney and Bone marrow damage to solvent sniffing. In High doses inhalants can cause rapid loss of control and loss of consciousness. Overdose can Lead to irreversible damage to brain and body tissues and death from respiratory arrest. Inhalants As with most drugs can be lethal but during my 16 years of experience in working with adolescents and adults addicted to everything from alcohol to Zippo lighters telling them of the dangers does Little to Stop their abuse. Most people can to be scared out of abusing drugs. No one is so Young and naive As to believe that there Are no risks to inhaling lighter fluid for example but they still inhale the Vapours. People continue to abuse dangerous and life threatening substances because they like the a High a the feeling of Well being the elevated mood. Because Young people May feel immortal they done to think anything can happen to them so even when aware of the risks adolescents might be motivated to continue inhalant use for the following reasons a a sense of adventure. A a need for stimulation. A a desire to be like others in the group. A to escape from reality. Drugs can give rewards without work. You can be an accepted member of a group without any contributions or responsibilities except the desire to use the drug. What Are the signs of inhalant abuse the physical or visual external signs of use May include a a rash around the nose and Mouth. A breath odor. A residue on the face hands and clothing. Eye irritation redness swelling and tearing. A irritation of the Throat lungs nose coughing gagging or sinus discharge. A nausea and headaches. May occur Early in intoxication and after it. The emotional symptoms Are similar among most drug abusing adolescents. They Are usually described by family members As angry defiant destructive. Family members Are most infuriated by the users provocations a agreements violated promises broken basically the adolescent is unable to be trusted. These characteristics May describe most adolescents whose major task in growing up is to change their relationship to the family. However this process is intensified when drug alcohol abuse is involved. What to do if you discover your youngster is inhaling solvents detoxification from chronic use should be monitored and withdrawal symptoms dealt with by a drug treatment program. The child often a grandiose illusion of invulnerability to injury and a sense that magical transformation without Effort is possible therefore done to believe them if they say to you a now that i know the dangers i will Stop a or a i am one Young patient who wanted help confided in me that even under family a supervision he managed to do a some hits of butane. Once Young people have become involved in drug or alcohol abuse it is not easy for them to give up the drug or the image they have of themselves in the role they have created. A just say not Little to no Impact. What to do if the child is a chronic user As opposed to a youngster who just had a couple of experiences they will probably require an in patient treatment facility for adolescent substance abusers. As in the Case of any major illness the abuse or dependence on drugs is a serious indicator requiring intensive treatment and family support.
