European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - June 21, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes a Page 11 letters a readers react to Freedom of Choice i Sueann Landers dear Ann Landers eight months after my husband died his Mother had a stroke. She is now in the Hospital being rehabilitated. I help out by driving my 87-year-old father in Law to visit her. Sometimes there Are other family members in the car but usually we Are alone. Lately he has been making passes at me. When he takes my to walk he brushes my behind with his hand he has also made suggestive remarks about my sleeping alone. Once he kissed me hard on the lips catching me completely by Surprise. I was absolutely speechless. I find his behaviour More and More upsetting and i done to know what to do about it. At times i would like to Belt him but in a not one who goes around hitting people and i can to see myself doing that. In be admonished him to behave himself and remember that in a his daughter in Law but he just laughs. I confided this to another family member who also laughs and thinks its hilarious. This situation is becoming increasingly intolerable and i done to know what to do about it. Can you guide me Ann a not amused in new York dear new York for crying in the grog this 87-year-old Romeo has a Geranium in his cranium. When he gets fresh done to hesitate to put his hands where they belong in a firm no nonsense manner. If you decked the old coot and he was injured when he hit the turf you a feel awful. Dear Ann Landers in be been married for nine years to a Man who has always stressed the importance of his invalid Mother lived with us from the time we married until she died. His daughter and son from his first marriage moved in with us shortly after a a grandma passed away. The daughter stayed for five years until she was 23. The son was with us for six years. The daughter and i do not get along because she was dead set against her father marrying again. My husband Felt guilty for going against the wishes of his children although they were Well aware that his marriage to their Mother was miserable. A while Back during a discussion about having the family together for easter my husband made a statement that absolutely floored me. He said a Man should not put their wives first because wives Are not family. They Are strangers. Blood relatives should always come before the now i ask you Ann am i crazy or does he have it wrong what do you do with a spouse who has this sort of attitude do you get him to go for counselling or do you get yourself a divorce lawyer i done to expect my husband to change but i find it very difficult to accept the fact that i will never be no. 1 in his life. I know now that this was the main problem All along because All our arguments have been about his family. Please size up this situation and give me some guidance. A an unrelated wife dear unrelated after nine years of marriage you Are Well aware of the Way his head works. You Are Wise not to expect any changes in a Man whose concepts Are etched in Granite. The Best thing you can do is ask yourself that Well known Ann Landers question a would i be better off with him or without him a then do what is in your own Best interest. Good Luck. Gem of the Day its always a Good idea to plan ahead. Remember it Wasny training when Noah built the Ark. C creators Syndicate i am writing in response to the letter a fearing the i believe a clarification of the concept of Freedom is needed. Personal Freedom is a treasure we americans Pride ourselves on protecting. But Freedom carries with it responsibility. While exercising Freedom we must never infringe on another persons Freedom. What it boils Down to is this we can do what we want to with a your own self a we can overeat or starve ourselves we can stay up late or retire at eight we can buy and sell love and hate we can handle our own lives As we see fit As Long As there Are no negative repercussions in the lives of others caused by our actions. When others Are adversely affected by our actions or choices we have overstepped the limit and infringed on their Freedom. The writer says a Many people will not like my choices and i will not like theirs but we each have to live with i wish to accompany that quote with a mental picture. I know a couple who exercised their right to choose. They chose to abuse drugs for Many years. During the woman a pregnancy she drank heavily. Several months later the child was bom. An and a leg were missing. The remaining hand and foot were twisted and deformed. The child had numerous internal defects also but a Beautiful face and Bright shining intelligent eyes. The parents were mortified horrified stricken with guilt. They erase from their minds the memory of All those a a choices they had made for a a themselves at All those past parties. Their child however Wasny to affected by their abuse of Freedom for very Long. He Only had to a live with their choices for a few months. Then he died and was stripped of his Freedom to choose forever. When did he become a person at Conception twelve weeks Twenty four weeks at birth who 79th engr in Celebration the 79th engr in will commemorate its 50th anniversary with an organizational Day Celebration july 7 at Gerszewski Barracks sports Field in Karlsruhe. Mandery Knie Lingen West Germany can give a precise answer All we know is that somewhere along that delicate line his rights were trampled by others and his Short tragic life was blighted. He could not protect himself. We americans who talk of Freedom and personal rights need to remember this Small boy and fight for his memory. When the rights of the innocent the helpless and the Young Are infringed that is an ominous sign for a nation. A Melanie h. Milton a Schattenburg West Germany Reading the recent letter a fearing the loss of Choice a brought to mind another Freedom of Choice argument. In a referring to that often heard cry that any legislation restricting or Banning abortion would infringe on a woman a Freedom of Choice Over her own body. Without going into the Issue of the other body involved in an abortion 1 would like to suggest that that most women faced with an unwanted pregnancy have usually made at least two choices prior to becoming pregnant. They have chosen to have Intercourse and they have chosen not to protect themselves against an unwanted pregnancy. Someone unable to choose abstinence or birth control should not be allowed to choose life or death for her unborn child. A Kathryn Ryan Berlin i would like to address this in very simple terms governments Are forced to place restrictions and limitations on certain a a freedoms because there arc unfortunately too Many people who will not accept responsibility to do something without there having to be a Law to make you do it. If you care enough to buckle your own seat Belt you surely buckle up your infant who cannot do so himself. So then you have an Accident and look who else besides you must pay for your a Freedom of a woman who would use drugs or alcohol also a drug deserves to be arrested for fetal abuse. Again the fetus must pay the Price for the negligence of the Mother. The same goes for abortion. So As you can see these limitations arc imposed to protect you and the innocent who cannot protect themselves not to take away your Freedom of Choice. A spec. Douglas r.
