European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - June 21, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Jutland the Sand dunes Rise in the background at the Campground in Ringsted near Veale. Boats Are wed up at the docks at the fishing Village of hvide Sande on the Western Side of Ringkob ing fiord. Continued from Page 13 forests that dominate the Eastern half. Clear smooth flowing streams meander through the valleys and the rolling Farmland looks like parts of Northern Idaho. Because of the country s basically Rural character Denmark offers instant Relief from the Urban stress of Germany. The Pace changes As soon As you Cross the Border putting the White knuckle autobahn driving behind you. Ahead is a winding country Road with few cars and Laid Back courteous Drivers. No one is speeding or flashing his lights to Tell you to move Over. The Danes Are unfailingly courteous and Friendly to visitors. Many Danes speak excellent English and seem to relish the Chance to practice it. Because of Jutland s varied Countryside the campgrounds Are in Many different settings and offer an equally wide Range of recreational opportunities. On Holm land s Klit you can pitch your tent behind White Sand dunes and fall asleep to the sound of breaking surf. Jutland s largely unspoiled North sea beaches among the most Beautiful in Europe offer excellent swimming and windsurfing. The Mars Side campsite at Skjerne is popular with anglers. The 1990 Campground guide of the German automobile club adar makes a few critical observations about Denmark s campgrounds. Among the shortcomings cited by adar is that some Sites Are unsuitable for motor Homes because the ground is too uneven. Another complaint is that few campgrounds offer Hobby courses or entertainment to help campers while away the time. But to those of us who still think camping should have an element of roughing it these Quot shortcomings Quot Are benefits. A lot full of 50-foot motorized houses sprouting to antennae has never been my idea of a place to get away from it All and enjoy the outdoors. And people who Camp should be self sufficient enough to find their own entertainment. The danish campsites that we stayed in or visited were pleasant and relaxing with Good facilities. They were in attractive natural settings and had Well maintained grounds. For an american who has camped across North America from ass Teague Island md., to Vancouver Island Canada they were refreshingly rustic. Especially in Germany Many tent and trailer Parks have been so Quot improved Quot that they resemble spas or Semi Urban amusement Parks More than campgrounds. In addition to the location and the grounds there Are several other factors that make a Good Campground. Most important Are the restroom and Shower facilities. In the two campsites where we stayed at Skjerne and in Ringsted near Vele f they were clean and comfortable though not luxurious. The showers had plenty of hot water but it was not free. In Skjerne a 5-Kroner 78<t Token purchased in the office produced ?T0uj minutes of hot water. At Ringsted a 1 Kroner 1 Coin was Good for three minutes of hot water. M the Danes Are a child Friendly nation and the campgrounds generally reflect this fact. M105.
