European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - June 21, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse I a it a it a a it. European camping amp a v. V at left Ana richter3, came Down with Chicken pox but still enjoyed playing in the Sand at the Chi Emsee Campground. Above a Shady family camping site at the renovated arc facility. Playground and a bathing and toilet area with plenty of hot showers and sinks to Wash dishes in. Although there Are plenty of Trees and newly planted shrubs throughout the Campground the Sites Are close together and do not provide much privacy. Traffic noise and wind from the Lake have increased after last Winter s wind storms blew Down several Trees outside the Campground said Campground manager Keith Hanley. But neither the Perrins or the richters said noise was a problem. It is always Best to make a reservation at the Campground Hanley said especially during the fourth of july memorial Day and labor Day weekends and july and August. Hanley recommends a one month reservation in general and a 60-Day reservation for especially Busy weekends. But like the sign on the Barbershop door says a walk ins Are Welcome Quot Hanley added. A we can almost always find them a prepared site if they bring their own tent Quot Hanley said. A we have never turned anyone two common misconceptions campers have about Chi Emsee is that rental tents Are available and that people can Park their cars by the campsites said assistant manager Debbie Ward. Campers Are allowed to drive to their campsites and set up Camp but they then must Park in a nearby lot. There Are seven tents permanently set up that Cost $15 a night but the Campground does not rent tents that people can set up themselves. There Are three trailers that Are rented for $20 a night but these Are booked up until August. Other prices include $8 for unprepared tent Sites $10 for prepared tent Sites without electricity and $12 with electricity and $12 for trailer Sites. Prices Are for up to four people there is a $1.50 charge for each additional person. Camping equipment such As lanterns Gas stoves ice chests and sleeping bags can be rented. Those who want to be closer to the Lake can use one of the area s German campgrounds but the prices Are higher Hanley said. The Harras Campground for example charges 6.50 Marks per person 2 Marks for electricity 5 Marks for tents 2.50 Marks for automobiles 5 Marks for vans and 4.50 Marks for children. All those fees add up rapidly. I camped on an unprepared site in the overflow area toward the rear of the Campground. I slept Well after my three hour Bike ride around the Lake turned into a Chilly Moonlight stroll because of a Flat tire. For the Bike trip to Berchtesgaden the next morning i travelled on Highway 305 from nearby Bernau to staubach. From there i left Highway 305 and passed through the towns of Bergen and Siersdorf before picking up Highway 306 going into Zinzell and Berchtesgaden. Another option is to stay on Highway 305 the entire tips if you want to try this trip Don t try to do it in four Days. Take at least a week so that you will be Well rested and have time to enjoy the Many local attractions. A few other tips take along Basic tools a spare tube or a tire repair kit and a pump that can be attached to the Bike Frame. Don t forget your passport. Dress comfortably a biking shorts Are a Good idea a and pack a lightweight rain suit. Pack As lightly As you possibly can. You la love yourself for it on the Mountain climb. Detailed local maps Are Nice to have. Take along a Good sunblock especially if you have a Light completion. Take lots of Good attitude. It s free and it comes in Handy when things Are going wrong. A . The route i took is moderately Hilly and does t have much traffic. There Are mountains on the right Side and Meadows on the left until you enter the Alps near Zinzell. After a Steep downhill ride when you leave Zinzell however there is a Long hard climb for about six Miles until you reach Taubensee. There Are two German campgrounds in a Beautiful Valley setting in Taubensee which is near Berchtesgaden. From Taubensee the remainder of the trip is downhill until you reach Berchtesgaden. In Berchtesgaden the armed forces recreation Center building across the Street from the train station is a Good place to Stop to Check on the local activities. The travel time from Chi Emsee to the arc office was about 6.5 hours. There Are two camping Sites near the Koni see which is about three Kilometres from Berchtesgaden and another site just outside of town on the Road that leads to Salzburg. I stayed at camping Grafe Lehen one of the two German campgrounds on Highway 20 near the Koni see. This camping spot very popular among East germans offers hot showers eating facilities and a nearby River to Lull you to sleep at night for 9.50 Marks. Camping Allie Glezen which is on the Road to Salzburg and is popular among americans is about a 20-minute walk from downtown Berchtesgaden and offers a swimming Pool and numerous nearby hiking trails. It was All downhill from Berchtesgaden to Salzburg. It took about two hours to reach the c Ity Campground at 14 in Salzburg. There Are a few other camping Sites available but they Are farther from the City and near noisy Railroad tracks. Stad camping Salzburg Cost about $10 and offered soft Grassy Sites hot showers and an extremely average breakfast. The site is about a 20-minute walk from downtown Salzburg and is Only a few blocks irom the train station. There Are about 10 trains daily from Salzburg to Bernau and the Cost is about 16 Marks for both passenger and bicycle. June 21, 1990 stripes Magazine
