Is. .4 a sgt letters dear Ann Landers recently Tny husband and i were in new York on business. While Riding in a taxi from la Guardia Airport into the City we began to make Small talk with the Driver who seemed exceptionally pleasant and Friendly. We asked about his family and he proudly told us about his wonderful wife and Fine children. Then he asked about ours. We told him that we had raised nine children a a four of our own and five we adopted three korean girls and two boys from Vietnam. The cab Driver seemed very much interested in All the details. He told us How Nice we were and How fortunate our children were to have found a Home with Loving people. We assured him that the Good Fortune was ours since we have had so Many wonderful Happy years together. When we arrived at our hotel i understand Why my husband was taking so Long to Settle the fare with the Driver. When he finally came into the hotel he explained that the Driver refused to accept the fare which was $25. He kept repeating a you Are Good people please let this ride be on my husband told him a absolutely not a and insisted that he accept the Money. In a sure new yorkers will find this Story hard to believe but its True. Personally i love new yorkers and i think their cabbies Are the greatest. A p k. In Colleyville Texas dear Colleyville what an upper driving a cab in new York has got to be one of the worlds toughest jobs. Thank you for letting us know that there a a Honey of a Hackie out there bucking that brutal traffic but not letting it ruin his disposition. Dear Ann Landers i recently read your column about a molester who went for counselling and received Only one year in jail. Three years ago my 17-year-old son agreed to confess to touching a child after he was promised by the state that he would be Given professional help. After he confessed the tables quickly turned and he was labelled a criminal. The arresting detective said a if that was my kid. Id shoot our son was convicted of one count of molestation first offence and received 12 years with no parole. This is the minimum sentence for Cirild molestation in Arizona. Since that time he has received no psychiatric help no counselling and no assistance of any kind. He sits in his cell Day after Day waiting for the 12 years to be up. By now the child May have forgotten the five minutes of touching but for us the suffering goes on a maybe for the rest of our lives. Can you Tell me Ann where is Justice Why can a terrible thing like this happen if you live in the wrong state i am heartsick and cannot understand this cruel sentence that May ruin a Young Many a life. Please help me. A oppressed in Arizona dear Mother that a five minutes of touching May seem inconsequential to you but it could have a horrendous effect on that child for Many years to come. I agree however that 12 years with no Chance of parole is an extremely harsh sentence for a first offence especially for a 17-year-old. Moreover it is outrageous that your son is receiving no counselling. I Send my condolences to you dear. And Here is a plea for compassion to anyone in Arizona who might possibly take another look at this Case. Please let me know if you can help. Ltd creators Syndicate a Short shelf life restricts Nutrasweet use i have read Many letters to the stars and stripes and have been amused at How Well the replies manage to tap dance around a straight answer. The question or i should say reply that prompted this letter was the explanation of commissary stocking of diet soda. The writer asked Why we in Europe Only received diet soda sweetened with a Nutrasweet saccharin blend instead of the 100-percent Nutrasweet. The reply to this question was straightforward All right but i have to question the Validity of it. We were told that our diet sodas come from the states and consequently the sugar substitute Content does not differ. Over the two year period i have spent in Europe i have yet to Lay eyes on a 100-percent Nutrasweet diet soda. Maybe i live in the wrong part of the country or too Remote an area. I would like to know How Many diet soda drinkers out there Are enjoying the 100-percent Nutrasweet sodas. I know that the diet soda sold in the United states is 100-percent Nutrasweet. I also know the difference in taste is noticeable. So Why Are we being told that we la re drinking the same diet soda our fellow americans in the states Are drinking i realize there Are More important issues than the contents of a diet drink. What concerns me is the legitimacy of the answer Given in stars and stripes. A Judith Rogers Heilbronn West Germany. Both the Hahn and Ramstein commissaries sell Only diet Pepsi and diet Coke which contain blended sweeteners . Nutrasweet and saccharin. These diet pepsis and cokes were both bottled in the United states or so it says on the cans. Cafes Headquarters is in Dallas Texas. Being a resident of Texas before coming to Germany i know for a fact that at any major store there All popular diet sodas Are sold with 100-percent Nutrasweet. Although it is True that diet Pepsi and Coke Are produced in the United states in both forms either 100-Perccnt Nutrasweet or with the blend due to consumer pressure these companies have found that the Only sodas that sell in the states Are the ones with 100-percent Nutrasweet the writer of the original letter asked Why the commissary supplied popular diet sodas with the Nutrasweet saccharin blend not whether the soda contain any Nutrasweet at All. The main Point is that diet sodas sold in the United states do contain 100-Perccnt Nutrasweet. If cafes can Only order items that Are on the authorized list then it is time they change that list to include distributors that Supply diet sodas containing 100-percent Nutrasweet. A name and location withheld. The commissary spokesman said that a sodas arc from the United states and do contain i wish to nominate him for this months Doublespeak award or should i say Hal speak award. Yes the diet Pepsi that i was drinking when i read this letter stated that it contained a Anutra Sweet Brand but when i rotated the can about one Quarter of a turn in very very very Fine print i read this a use of this product May be hazardous to your health. This product contains saccharin writers emphasis which has been determined to cause cancer in Laboratory hey done to cigarettes do the same thing my Point is the writer of the other letter wanted to know Why diet sodas that arc sold Here done to contain Only Nutrasweet instead of the Nutrasweet saccharin blend. Is this the current trend in the u.s.? or arc the beverage manufacturers conspiring to give us diet soda drinkers cancer by using saccharin yes my diet soda was packaged in the United states Cheraw s.c., to be exact. The commissary spokesman a answer stated that the sugar substitute Content does not differ from the diet sodas that Are sold in the United states and that a one time buy of diet soda on the Economy was a possible source of different sugar substitutes found in the soda. As 1 said earlier my product was packaged in South Carolina to my knowledge still a part of the and it states in very Fine print that there is saccharin in it 5.3 my per fluid ounce. Therefore How do you account for this difference in sweetener Content a sgt. Timothy e. Parker bad sibling station West Germany. How Long has it been since the commissary spokesman either had a diet soda from the states or checked what s stocked on the shelves commissary the More popular diet sodas in the states As diet Pepsi diet Coke and others use Only Joo percent Nutrasweet and have for the past four or five years while the ones sold Over Here contain a blend of Nutrasweet and saccharin. It is not because it was manufactured in Germany. The one i checked was diet Coke and it was produced in Atlanta a. It has Long been a concern As to Why this Type of diet soda is the Only thing available to us Here in Europe when it has been non existent in the states for several years. A name withheld Baum older West Germany editors note a we received two replies to these letters. The first is from Barton l. Hairr director operations air Force commissary service Central european Region prior replies to consumer a questions pertaining to Why we do not sell Nutrasweet diet soft drinks in the commissary were in error. The replies were not meant to deliberately mislead the Consumers and in a sorry it Wasny to 100-percent Correct. Cafes Europe our supplier of canned sodas advises that 100-percent Nutrasweet diet soft drinks Are not available in Europe at this time. Several manufacture representatives were contacted and All stated that the shelf life of the product prohibits shipment to Europe. The taste begins to deteriorate within three months and with the pipeline for shipment to Europe the shelf life would expire before the item could be stocked. However due to an inability to ship Nutrasweet products the food and Drue administration Fra has authorized the use of saccharin in soft drinks sent to Europe As it helps prolong the shelf life of the product. Editors note a the second reply is from col. Sandra s. Whitt commander troop support Agency european commissary Region we goofed the Correct response to the question should Nave been that the Nutrasweet saccharin blend is used in diet sodas for overseas destinations because temperature variations cause Nutrasweet to lose its Sweet flavor. The Long pipeline that these diet sodas must travel from the United states to our commissaries in Europe makes it difficult to control these variations. We apologize for our error and Hope that this response will serve to Clear up the matter. European edition col. Gene e. Toff intend Usan commander Ediker in chief it. Col. Suzanne l.
