     European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - August 12, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse                                Yanks do their bit on and off stage in a student Prince Chuck Roberts staff writer the ingredients include. An american actor portraying a German Prince a musical based of an English version of a German play and hundreds americans and germans seated before a stage in an ancient Castle. Combine All this and you get the student Prince an English language musical Romance played out in Heidelberg Castle each year about a shy Young Prince who Falls in love with the innkeeper s Niece while attending the University of Heidelberg. The Prince is played by Kevin tarte a Seattle native who has come to Heidelberg for the past. Three years since graduating from the Eastman school of music in new York. Tarte is juggling his performance in the student Prince with the role of growl Tiger  hit musical cats in Hamburg. Backing up tarte in the student chorus is Gary Wetterhall a civilian employee with the army Materiel come in Meckenheim. He said performing in the Castle courtyard gives a new perspective to the popular tourist spot. Quot it s fantastic Quot said Wetterhall interviewed during dress rehearsals a few Days before the play opened saturday for a seven performance run. Quot old Heidelberg just sort of comes to  his son Justin plays the part of the Prince when the Prince is a child. Wetterhall said it s great to work with professional actors such As tarte but he also has something to offer to the German actors in the mixed cast. Quot they May sing better than me but i get to coach them in their  another local actor in the chorus is Andrew Snyder who works with the itt office at Rhein main a. This is Snyder s third year in the musical but not his last. Ill keep doing the play As Long As i m in Europe Quot said Snyder who also has a leading role in the musical Oklahoma next month in Darmstadt West Germany. Quot there s not any of us who would t do it for  composer Sigmund Romberg based the musical on a Book by american author Dorothy Donnelly. Her Book was an adaption of the play old Heidelberg by Wilhelm Meyer Forster. The play takes place during the Early 18th Century when life was simpler and for the Prince a bit too simple after 20 years of living a sheltered and controlled life in the dreary kingdom of Karlsberg Prince Karl Franz is granted a year of fun and frolic while he attends the University of Heidelberg. Karl is wide eyed and open mouthed upon arrival in Heidelberg and both become wider when he meets Kathie the Ever popular barmaid at the inn of the three Golden apples he joins a fraternity and is soon shedding the cobwebs of Karlsberg unfortunately reality sets in when the future ruler has to make a Choice Between kingdom or Kathie. But the songs and dialogue Aren t As serious As the decision the Prince must make. Helmut Hein has shortened and lightened the musical that he has directed the past 16 years particularly amusing is the performance of Nick Lloyd a British actor who plays Lutz the Prince s crotchety Valet who finds life in Heidelberg beneath his dignity is Jim i Rhio ii the Prince Kevin tarte leaves his sheltered life for the wild times of Heidelberg. With puckered lips and feminine Demeanour the whining Valet routinely brought laughter from the audience. While holding a pair of linked sausages before his Rouge face during one scene he said Quot even in death they were not  shows begin at 8 . Tonight and on aug. 17, 18, 25 and 29. Proceeds from the final performance go to the Uso. Performances will be held in the Castle courtyard if weather permits otherwise they will be inside King s Hall. Some shows May be sold out but extra tickets go on Sale at 7 . At the Castle Entrance if performances Are outside. Ticket prices Range from 15 Marks $9 to 35.50 Marks $22.75.
