Some of America s most narcissistic Young actors Are Back to strike familiar poses in Young guns ii a movie that continues Hollywood s embellishment of the old West legend of gunfighter Billy the kid. The film opens with a Ripoff of Little big Man showing Emilio Estevez grow ing Ludgier with each movie playing Billy As a dying 90-year-old who apparently survived what was thought to be his fatal ambush at the hands of sheriff Pat Garrett. Through movie magic we re whisked Back to new Mexico territory in 1879, at the end of the infamous Lincoln county cattle wars As Billy recounts the events that made up the latter part of his Ca reer. He s put together a new gang which includes Garrett William Peter sen who really was Billy s drinking buddy at one time and Bandit Arkan Sas Dave Rodabaugh Christian Slater. The roster is rounded out by Alan Ruck As a widowed Farmer and Baltha Zar Getty As a Young Pennsylvania or Phan. Billy is having a grand old time making headlines As a cattle rustler while half the territory looks for him but the Lin Coln county politicians want to erase the stain of the cattle wars forever. In a general Roundup Billy s old Side kicks Doc Skurlock Kiefer Sutherland who became a new York teacher and Chavez Lou Diamond Phillip who fled to old Mexico Are snared and extradited Back to Lincoln to await execution. Billy Springs his buddies and they ride off again but this time the Law hits on a Way of bagging the gang they enlist the Aid of Garrett give him a sheriff s badge and Promise Fame and Fortune if he brings in the kid. As cattle Baron John Chisum James Coburn says it takes a thief to catch a  from there it s one Long Chase scene enlivened Only briefly by some humorous exchanges Between Billy and Arkansas Dave Over who really runs the gang. One by one the outlaws go Down As Garrett gets Ever closer but there s no sense of tension in the Way director Geoff Murphy moves toward the film s non Climax. This sequel is a lot More tedious than the first instalment and that one had a fair amount of tedium. One major draw Back is the Lack of a Central focus of evil a role so amply handled in the original by Jack Palance surely one of the Best screen villains in history. Here the usually intense Peterson is the Only candidate for antagonist and he gives a flaccid performance As Garrett. The film also falters with its bogus ending. The script follows the accepted facts of the kid s career right up to his shooting by Garrett. But then things get confused. The problem in t that writer John Fusco puts in an unusual ending it s that he was too Lazy or unimaginative or both to think up a plausible Way of explaining How it happened. Hardcore fans of the Western genre May find this movie likable. But i consider myself such a fan on the basis of having watched the Good the bad and the ugly some 20 times if for Noth ing else and Young guns ii gets just two stars from me.
