European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - October 4, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday october 4,1990 the stars and stripes Ann Landers dear Ann Landers a year ago i Felt a Lump in my breast while doing self Examina Tion i called my doctor immediately. He scheduled a Mammogram Page 11 letters my id and a Sonogram i was told a no cancer. You j have a cyst and there is nothing to worry i went Back to my doctor three times that year. He did not recheck the Mammogram nor did he order another one. He did not aspirate the cyst nor did he suggest a Biopsy. By the time i saw another gynaecologist i had had a cancerous tumor in my breast for a year. A Mastectomy was performed and i am now undergoing my second round of chemotherapy. I done to know if the outcome would have been different had my doctor been More attentive but i do know that i lost out on the benefits of Early detection. The following information can mean the difference Between life Ana death to your female readers. Please urge them to pay attention. If a patient should discover a Lump in her breast Here is what should happen ii doctor examines Lump 2 Mammogram Given 3 patient comes Back in six weeks. If the Lump is still present it should be aspirated and the fluid biopsied. The doctors of this country need to be Alert to what is going on and treat breast cancer As aggressively As they treat other malignant tutors. Also Ann please let women know that they should insist on a Biopsy. The Mammogram can take pictures of lumps and cysts but it cannot Tell whether the Lump is malignant or benign. And women should be aware there is at least a 10 percent margin of error in the Reading of a Mammogram. I read you every Day Ann. Please print this. Too bad i did no to see one like it two years ago. ?j.b., Memphis dear Memphis i called or. Lasalle Leffall jr., professor and chairman of the department of surgery at Howard University in Washington . He said a every Lump in the breast deserves careful assessment. Aspiration is the treatment for breast cysts. If the Lump is solid even if the Mammogram is negative which it May be in about 10 percent of patients with breast cancer Biopsy is absolutely mandatory. The Only Way to prove positively whether or not a Lump is cancerous is to do a Biopsy of the so dear readers let me again remind you that 50 percent of the doctors who Are practising Medicine today graduated at the Bottom half of their class. The diploma on the Wall does no to Tell you anything except that he or she is licensed to practice. Clip this column and read it again the next time you go for a Mammogram. If your doctor does no to follow the procedure outlined by or. Leffall hand it to him or her. Dear Ann Landers in be been enjoying the gems at the foot of some of your columns and came across one that i think you might like. Here it is on cleaning out your desk Here a a bit of Good advice see now that you heed it. The minute you throw something out you re bound to find you need it. ?m.r.g., Arlington a. C creators Syndicate views exchanged on homosexuality i feel pretty certain that this letter will not be printed because it is too controversial but ill feel better getting it a off my the subject bothering me is homosexuality. I done to really care what these people do in private or even if they Are in the military. What really bugs me is All the noise about homosexuals being discriminated against. They actually have the nerve to stand up in front of people and say they should have the same rights As everyone else for jobs houses the military etc., when they announce their sexual preferences to the world. Lets say for instance that i have a very special relationship with this cute German Shepherd. Now chances Are the dog and i could have a very Nice life together provided there Are no poodles in the neighbourhood. Now i go to work and my peer gets a promotion and in a pretty sure i deserved it ahead of him her. My next step should be to claim discrimination run to social actions and Tell them they did no to promote me just because i like to have sex with my dog. The Point is that sex should be at least somewhat private regardless of who or what it is with. It should not be a basis for creating new Laws. There Are enough Laws that can to be enforced or be enforced already. If these people the homosexuals had enough sense not to announce their sexual preferences they probably face so much what prompted this letter were the actions of Gays at the conference for aids in san Francisco among other things. I hate to think about anyone suffering the tragedies of this horrible disease but when they protest and disrupt an event set up mostly for their Benefit its hard to understand what they want. A staff sgt. Alan s. Patterson Rhein main a Germany your recent article on homosexuals in the military gave some excellent examples of patriotic men and women who had exemplary service records yet were forced out by the Pentagon a official policy of discrimination. Department directive no. 1332.14 says that homosexuals adversely affect the ability of the armed forces to maintain discipline Good order and morale. Is the Pentagon suggesting that homosexuals in uniform Are unruly and unpatriotic this is an insult to the thousands upon thousands of Gay men and lesbians serving in the United states armed forces around the world. Homosexuals in the service usually work harder to prove themselves and gain acceptance. The Pentagon a policy also states that Gays endanger National Security because of the danger that secrets might be disclosed under threat of blackmail. If homosexuals were allowed to live and work openly without fear there be anything to blackmail them with. Has the Pentagon even thought of this citing poor discipline and Low morale the . Armed forces once segregated Black and White service members. Eventually they changed their policies along with the rest of the country. The military has been lagging behind on the homosexual Issue and needs to catch up with mainstream America. The military needs to spend More time tracking Down child abusers wife beaters and drug users and leave the homosexual Community alone. Until the Pentagon changes its policy Gay men and women will continue to live in fear while serving their country. A name withheld hell Nikon a Greece a writer decries description of a oreans while i enjoyed your recent article on the role of Lajes Field in operation desert shield i was dismayed by your depiction of our Host nationals Here in the azores. Your writer described the islanders As Riding their donkeys to Market and waving to americans driving by in cars. This description is both inaccurate and condescending. I have lived in an Adorean Village for Over three years and i have yet to see anyone dog their marketing by Donkey. Burros Are used for farm chores in some Rural areas particularly by the older generation Farmers. However today a Middle class Adorean going to Market is far More Likely to drive a late Model japanese compact or even an occasional Bow than a Burro. In fact most islanders drive neither being savvy and fuel conscious enough to use the islands excellent bus system leaving their cars at Home which is Why they Are far less dependent upon foreign Oil than we Are. Please done to conclude that i have anything against either Farmers or Burros. Most local Farmers Are highly intelligent men who know More about animal husbandry and agriculture than i will Ever know. I also like Burros a our family owns one As a pet. My objection is to cultural stereotyping of Host nationals which is far too prevalent among americans serving overseas. As the newspaper serving these americans you Are in a position to counter stereotyping by presenting an accurate portrayal of life in our Host countries. So please lets put aside those tired old stereotypes. I Promise to do my part. Heck ill even ride my Donkey to Market and wave to the portuguese driving by in cars. A Judy Cerling Clark Lajes Field azores a learning the language recommended i just read your letters about a Short it prompted me to write. I can understand the Many a frustration of continually getting a a a Short haircut instead of the trim he wanted. I also understand the frustration of going into an a a american facility and no one Speaks English. I work for cafes and know that these places Barber Beauty shops and tailors Are concessionaires and Are run mostly by German vendors. This is the reason for the Lack of English. I know this does no to make it any better and in a not saying its right or fair but it be easier to learn to say a i would like a trim please in German and Deal with it after All we Are in Germany.
