Kennedy and John Kerry of Massachusetts and Barbara Mikulski of Maryland. Sen. Pete Wilson r-calif., did not vote. The researchers noted that from 1968 almost through the 1970s, asthma mortality rates declined. But they added a since the late 1970s, there has been an alarming reversal. It seems that rates Are increasing faster among younger children aged 5 to 14 years than among adolescents and Young adults aged 15 to 34  the editorial was written by drs. A. Sonia Buist of the Oregon health sciences University in Portland and William m. Vollmer of Kaiser Permanente Center for health research in Portland. The asthma study examined data on deaths of 5 to 34-year-Olds from 1968 through 1987 in All states except Hawaii and Alaska plus the District of Columbia. The number of deaths Rose steadily from 1978 through 1987, the most recent year figures were available and the 1987 rate of 4.2 per million population was even higher than the 4.0 1968 level. The highest mortality rate in 1987 was among non White males a 13.5 deaths per million and almost five times higher than the level for Whites of both sexes. When combined new York City and the Chicago area accounted for 21.1 percent of the asthma deaths studied. Researchers could not fully explain the increased death rates.
