Most people who go to the movies with any degree of frequency develop rosters of actors they love and actors they can to stand. For reasons too numerous to recount Here Mickey Rourke has always hovered near the top of my least favorite list. But in his latest movie desperate hours Rourke has a meaty role and unlike Many of his past performances he actually manages to do something interesting with this one. This is a remake of a 1955 thriller the desperate hours starring Humphrey Bogart and Fredric March about a gang of escaped convicts who take Over the House of a suburban family and terrorize the occupants. Rourke has the Bogie role As the head convict an intelligent psycho who escapes prison with the help of his Beautiful Law yer played by Kelly Lynch. She a also his Fiancee although you a never know it from the Way he slaps her around. He Heads Down the Road with his brother Elias Koteas and a half crazed Simpleton buddy David mors and they pick a suburban Home at random to use As a hideout for a few hours until Lynch can pick them up for their ride to Freedom in Mexico. In the Home live Mimi Rogers and her two kids. She a going through an acrimonious split with her husband Anthony Hopkins Over his recent affair with a younger woman. Its his bad Luck that he happens to be at the Home when Rourke and his sidekicks come  movies Hopkins and Rourke then wage psychological warfare on each other for an hour or so punctuated by an occasional lapse into bloody violence by Rourke As when he guns Down a hapless real estate agent who stops by the House. Meanwhile the Fri is trying to use Lynch to get to Rourke. The feds Are led by crusty special agent Lindsey Crouse who is Given to growling things like a my earrings Are killing me and in a in a real bad  the Best lines come from Rourke whose character is set up As something a Symbol for moral degeneration. When a repairman comes on a previously arranged House Call for example Rourke orders Rogers to get rid of him but the repairman tells Rogers she still has to pay for the visit. A forty eight Bucks for not doing a thing a says Rourke after he a gone. A a that a Why America is becoming a second rate  this film based on a novel and play by Joseph Hayes which were themselves inspired by a True Story offers credible performances All around and a fair degree of dramatic tension. But to be honest there a nothing Here that can to be found in abundance in the original which was one of bogies better efforts. And if a remake does no to improve on the original what a the Point of making it desperate hours rated r for violence and Brief like nanosecond nudity rates two and a half stars out of four. Its Worth a look if you done to have a lot of other things crowding your Agenda.
