European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - October 24, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Wednesday october 24, 1990 the stars and Stripe Sann Landers dear Ann Landers i married my College sweetheart who was a pre med student i left school m my senior Vear to put him through medical school. Those four years were very difficult. I was away from my family living in a foreign country and we had no Money. We pinched pennies to get by and it was a very tight squeeze. We had a child during a a time so last months of medical school. We moved Back to the states for his internship and residency. Tim worked 100 hours a week and was gone Days and nights. I was lonely and depressed about my empty marriage and resented raising a child alone. We had another child before Tim went on to do a Fellowship in specially training and then we moved again. I still saw him rarely and was living for the Day we could have a Normal family life. The Only time we had together was when i fed him at Midnight and massaged his weary Muscles while we watched videos. After 12 years of training Tim got a Job in the state wed hoped for. Shortly after we settled in he said he needed his space and moved out. I was devastated. It did no to take Long before i discovered that Tim was involved with a nurse. She is older than Tim nothing to look at and nobody could figure it out. Tim wants a divorce even though it Means disrupting the lives of his children and losing the respect of our families friends and colleagues. What makes a Man who has a devoted Loving undemanding wife cheat on her and walk out Why is it that so Many men have no sense of commitment and Are indifferent to what they do to the women and children they leave behind Why Are they so stupid that they done to know women who get involved with married men Are scum do we need to take a look at How we Are bringing up our sons i can to figure out any of this. Can you feeling used and betrayed in the South dear used and betrayed finding the answers to the questions you be raised is not nearly As important As getting yourself whole and healed. You Are going to need a great Deal of counselling. From it will come a better understanding of yourself which is far More vital than figuring out Why your husband used you so shamelessly. Good Luck dear. Write again and let me know How you re doing. Dear Ann Landers Many people have written you about tinnitus an ear problem that generates noise in the ears. It can be very annoying. My Type of tinnitus sounds like crickets chirping and it never stops. This has been going on for several years and i have Learned to live with it. Several months ago i began to hear music. Sometimes it is classical sometimes pop. Often i get vocal selections. I was reluctant to mention this to my husband for fear he would think i was getting loony. When i told him he checked out the radio and sure enough Ann i am tuned in i had a Small Bridge put in my Mouth last january and the Teeth have a Metal base. That base acts As a conductor. I never dreamed that this recent dental work would bring me so much pleasure. A music Lover in Georgia dear Lover talk about unexpected fringe benefits from dental work thanks for sharing your Story. I suggest that you stay tuned to National Public radio. A fall things considered is a marvelous program. You la love it. C creators Syndicate Page 11 letters a break even Price policy explained a think col. Flanagan has let the consumer in on some inside information about commissary pricing that we did t know about. I am referring to his recent explanation in the stars and stripes concerning fresh produce pricing. R we the Consumers have been repeatedly told that All products sold in the commissary Are sold at the wholesale or a at Cost Price. In other words if the commissary system pays $1 for a product that is the Price we pay plus a 5 percent surcharge. Now col. Flanagan tells us that fresh produce is not sold at wholesale or a at Cost prices but each individual commissary determines a retail Price for the produce based on a a break even Point. My question is what is this a break even Point and How come there is a retail is. Wholesale Price for produce procured in Europe a sgt. 1st class John r. Overcash or. Bamberg Germany editors note a col. Bill g. Belcher acting commander troop support Agency european Region replies since we As the managers of the commissary Are responsible for pricing policies in the store dare asked us to provide a response to your questions. It is True that merchandise in the commissary is sold at Cost. Its also True that fresh produce As Well As meat items we might add Are sold at a a break even Point As col. Flanagan described it permit us to explain. First of All its important to understand that commissary merchandise is purchased through the use of a Stock find budget a revolving account that must be replenished by revenues brought in when the commissary merchandise is a a resold to our customers. Commissary managers Are entrusted with these funds with the understanding that they must take All necessary measures to ensure that no More than and no less than the amount of Money used to Purchase the merchandise for the commissary is recouped. Its fairly obvious that this is a relatively simple mat Ter when it comes to canned and packaged merchandise. But in handling fresh meat and produce items there Are inevitable losses due to Normal processing storage and handling. When fresh meat is prepared for Sale to customers an amount of product in the form of fat and Bones is always lost. Modern techniques deter a great Deal of deterioration but no matter How carefully fresh fruits and vegetables Are handled there will always be some items that get bruised bumped dropped or crushed. Customer handling of produce also accelerates its deterioration. Commissary managers must therefore establish the retail prices of meat and produce items so that they recoup any losses encountered through deterioration or Normal processing. For example if a Coni emissary receives a Box of 100 apples at a Cost of $9, then each Apple would be sold for 9 cents however if the produce manager had to throw away 10 apples for some reason either immediately or after having not sold then he would have to sell the apples at 10 cents in order to recoup the $9. Meat and produce managers May also adjust prices within certain limits in order to satisfy Supply and demand and to encourage the Sale of certain merchandise. For instance Many of our customers would like to try a a exotic produce but the Cost is often prohibitive. Commissary managers May then slightly reduce the Price of such merchandise and increase the Price of less costly produce in order to establish prices that customers Are willing and Able to pay. You May often see this practice As a a manager special in your commissary. We would like to Point out that this is a Standard practice in the grocery Industry. Commissary managers continually Monitor the status of their meat and produce accounts and make adjustments As necessary to ensure that they Are not in a loss or gain status. This is what col. Flanagan referred to As a break even we Hope that this response has served to answer your questions and thank you for this Opportunity of explaining these procedures. A Alabama fairy tale letter draws reply the recent letter a a fairy tale about injustice in Alabama a certainly excited the kind of response your a name withheld writer apparently attempted to obtain at least from me. As a life Long resident of Birmingham ala., i empathize with the writers frustration. But his veiled attempt to disguise his identity due to pending court action was pure histrionics. What response other than shaming those of us who Hail from Alabama could your Reader have been attempting to solicit what he or she failed to do was offer an alternative to the judicial mismanagement that plagues All 50 states and the Federal government. For every Case we might cite in one state other bureaucratic Pitfalls shape the judicial Laws of Texas new York California and the District of Columbia indeed most of the other government agencies at Home. The writers emotional attachment to his her brother and the slow judicial process in Alabama led to venting steam and disparaging regard for alabamians. I offer an alternative. I am writing my local legislative representative my congressional representative and my Hometown newspaper to show my displeasure at the treatment this persons brother suffers. I Hope that my concern As a military member and As a native of Ala Bama will incite them to act on stricter Laws regarding drunk driving. During my career in the army i have seen Alabama finally pass Laws requiring seat belts and child car seats and i saw the state of Texas finally pass a Law requiring motorcycle riders to Wear protective helmets. I know that citizens opinions matter especially when we unite and let the elected officials know what we want. I Hope your Reader will not hide behind the facade of pending court action when he or she considers what a fairy tale Justice Means to those of us who serve in the military away from Home. I certainly cannot go marching Back into the Jefferson county courthouse demanding Justice for this Man All by myself especially while 2,000 Miles from Home. I Hope in the future the Reader will discontinue this a Ergative tactic. His or her diatribe took away from the True message of the horrors of drinking and driving. That is what we must attack on a daily basis. Done to drink and drive done to let someone drink and drive and done to Host drinking when you cannot get your guests Home safely.
