European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - October 24, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Ski by Norm Zeigler travel outdoor writer nearly everyone has a favorite ski area. Usually die Choice involves much More than the Quality of the slopes. A Christmas week spent with family and in Laws helped put Kapraun Austria at the head of my list. A one of the things that made it special was the Romance and sparkle of an austrian Christmas. Another was the logistics involved. A brother in Law flew in from Central Africa. Others came from the East coast my wife and son and i drove Down from Central Germany. Just getting people from three different continents to the same place at the same time seemed an accomplishment. It was the last Winter before Europe s Snow drought. Big flakes were Drifting Down when we All met in Kapraun a few Days before Christmas. As darkness settled Over the mountains the windows of chalets and guest houses took on a Golden glow. The reunion mood the setting and the Holiday season made the snowfall seem More than Mere local weather. Even if it is not Christmas Kapraun is an easy town to like. You can find Many similar villages scattered throughout the Alps. A Cluster of buildings tucked into a Valley. Rustic chalets with wide roof overhangs and wooden balconies. A few Large hotels and pensions and a disproportionate apron above the Mai Kogel slopes Are within walking distance of most places in town. The Glacier held of the kit Steinhorn Tower Over Kapraun.
